A tale of three statues…

I’m a sucker for statues….. a bit like the ‘see food diet’ you know the one where you see food and then eat it…..I see a statue I have to take a photo.

It always annoys me there are so few statues of women that when I do find one I’m like a kid – making a fist then pulling my elbow down to my side and yelling (well more like just saying) Yes…..emphatically!  Finding statues of children brings a different response – more of a maternal interest I suppose.

We were in the city the other day and I finally got to see the controversial  ‘female’ statue that arrived earlier in the year – just before International Women’s Day.  A symbol of gender equality and female empowerment- looks feisty doesn’t she!

We spotted this little girl in Hawaii many years ago.  We came across her while wandering round the park on a hot day, she looked so cool near the pond and The Golfer did his usual trick of saying ‘stand over there’  meaning stand next to her and I’ll take your picture……totally oblivious to the fact the statue was in full sun and I was sweltered.

Joy, as she’s called is dedicated to the children of Hawaii……..She really did look happy……as children should….with her donated leis on her head and in her arms.  Me….I just looked hot – hot and sticky 🙂

About five miles up the road from Kapiolani Park is the Aloha Tower, and that’s where I  managed to get a photo of another young woman.  Seemingly she represents  ‘Farewell to thee’ a goodbye song written by the later to be Queen Liliuokalani and stands there near the cruise ship terminal, her hips swaying hula style and looking a little sad, usually surrounded by travellers so last year was the first time I was able to get a ‘clear’ shot.

Three young females,  all different.

Depicted as Strong…Independent….Carefree….Happy…. Wistful…..Sad.
I like them all – if asked I wouldn’t be able to pick a favourite.
Could you?

(if you’re interested there’s a little bit of information in the links)

I thought they’d be soft and cuddly….

I’m hoping not but I’m wondering if a recent purchase may not turn out to be the bargain I thought it would.

The change to really cold nights had us feeling a bit jaded in bed, it’s been comfortably warm but not cosy …..something needed to be done about it.  I suppose as we get older and things don’t work so well we must accept a helping hand to get the desired effect.  So after seeing a product on special last week I popped into the shop hoping it would solve our problem..

Eager to please I set to straight away and sorted things out ready for the first trial run – trouble was it fell short of our expectations and left us feeling rather uncomfortable.

Now I knew there was a difference (as described) between brushed cotton and flannelette ……one side being treated as opposed to two…….but didn’t realise how different it would feel.  What I bought didn’t have that soft cosy feel I remembered from years ago – of course manufacturers have changed, even though the raw product is the same the end result often isn’t.

So I must say our first foray into brushed cotton sheets…….as opposed to flannelette ………has not been as warming as I hoped it would.

Yes, they were washed before use but felt very firm and almost ‘cool’ to touch.  I know I’m being picky when I say there was no give in them  I like my sheets to mould themselves round my body, these didn’t.  They just sort of laid flat over us, the more I tried to gather them round me the more they resisted And it was a riot trying to turn over…..the brushed fabric didn’t allow you to move, our nightclothes kept ‘sticking’ to the sheets so we had to sit up and make a physical effort to turn to the other side.

All I can say about the pillow cases is that they crackled……sounds silly but that’s the only way I could describe the noise I heard as I lay there trying to get to sleep. I’ve never ever noticed any rustling noises in or around my pillows …….’cept for this past week , each time I moved my head there it was again……of course it didn’t bother The Golfer (he’d sleep….and snore through anything) so in the end one night I got up and changed the slips to some of my nice soft well worn (quiet) cotton ones.

We gave them a good trial run, it’s back to our usual ones this evening- here’s hoping for a good nights sleep.  They might go back on again next week but if not I’m sure my soft and cuddly need will be met by my bedmate- if not I’ll nip down to Spotlight for some ‘proper’  flannelette sheets 😊😊

Ocean Views….

Ocean Views from well placed Benches 😊

In just a couple of weeks I’ll be able to take advantage of this view of Queen’s Beach in Bowen. Just a short walk from our accommodation – 4.5kms of sand stretching from the mouth of the River Don down to Cape Edgecumbe. The very same beach in my header.  The one I’ll enjoy for several weeks 😎

Queens Beach – 28 July 2011

I first saw this plain and simple one a few years ago, I found it about an hour and a bit up the road from Bowen………right on the sandy beach at Monte’s Resort.  A lovely place to lunch on a Sunday afternoon. They were hit hard by Cyclone Debbie and weren’t open last year……we’ll definitely be making the drive out there this year.

Montes Reef Resort – 25 August 2009

Drive a few hours down south west of Melbourne along The Great Ocean Road here in Victoria and you can see this one set on the shoreline near the lighthouse at Port Fairy – two of my ‘favourite things. right next door to each other.

Treats…..

Treats:- Items that give great pleasure.

The trouble with letting some people loose in warehouse type shopping venues is that they take leave of their senses.

I’m not talking about anyone in particular…..ahem….. but a certain person feels that because he is presented with and then eats proper meals most of the time he is also entitled to let his hair down some of the time.  That’s great in theory but can be hard in practice because his some of the time often morphs into a lot of the time.  He’d happily live on sausage, bacon, eggs, & beans with fried bread on the side or sausage mash and beans or even beans on toast if someone ( that’d be me) wasn’t around to remind him of ‘Dr’s orders’  Losing weight plus lowering cholesterol levels don’t come that easily.

I’m not always a miserable grouch providing him with ‘healthy’ food – I also like the occasional comfort food meal as well as sweet (or even savoury) treats myself.  However I draw the line over some things because I’m not known for my self control – if it’s there and I can see and easily reach it there’s a good chance it’ll end up…..well we all know where it’ll end up 😊

Now as a little aside, it may be because we’re getting older and as oldies are known  to do, we occasionally talk about past treats……..things that reminds us both of our childhood……like toffee.  Not the hard, crack your teeth block type, that you break up with a tiny hammer but the soft chewy, cling to your teeth, individually wrapped in shiny paper ones.

Fast forward to a recent shopping expedition to Costco.   Not for our weekly shop items, more for goods of equal taste and quality to what we would buy elsewhere yet slightly better priced because of the size/quantity available.

It’s not exactly a treat making my way round various aisles, list clutched firmly in hand,  because without it I’m inclined to think …..oh that looks interesting, maybe we’ll try that…and then feel rather uncomfortable trying to deal with sticker shock and till roll panic when the grand total pops up.

It’s certainly not a treat when I’m desperately trying to control a trolley that always seems to be twice my height and girth while The Golfer wanders about ‘just looking’ sort of like a hunter gatherer,  returning with bits of this that and the other, things that are definitely not on my trusty list.  Some people might like them but seaweed chips are not exactly what I had in mind for a weekend snack while watching the footy 😊

Lots of his ‘gatherings’ are returned to the shelves – which is good in a way, because then I don’t need to go to the gym……as twice round the enormous barn like place is plenty of exercise for one day – however I did smile when he suggested we walk to the tills down a certain aisle.  Look what he wanted to buy….. a big 1.25kg container of sugar toffees. That’s over 2.5lbs for those in other lands!

Walkers nonsuch is not a brand I’m familiar with –  but how could I say no to his treat when he pointed out the little label on the side.  Gotta love a man who loves to share    😊😊

Another word for…..

Another word for computer problems…….router!
After another week of Internet dropping in and out, ending with nothing at all, we’re now back in business
I just say….thank goodness for scheduled posts.  And it’s good to see The Golfer smiling again 🙂

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

A couple of years ago I wrote a post .. A Way with Words …describing how some people use words in a way that gives a slightly different meaning to reality.  Making it seem more important than it is.

You’ll be happy to know it still goes on!  Just in another way.

Last week The Golfer took us out to lunch…..at his club…the golf club that is.

Now and again my daughters and I get together for lunch in a local cafe, this time they thought they’d like their Dad to come along..  He’s often occupied on those ‘ladies who like to lunch’ days and what with us being away ’til September, then both of them away soon after it’ll be a while ’til we see each other, so last week we all tootled off up to Healesville (yes again) …..because they had persuaded The Golfer to treat us….us being our ‘big’ girl, our ‘little’ girl and me 😊

Winter time means a new menu with lots of sections to look through.   Local produce is used – which often produces what could be described as ‘interesting’ dishes  – this is just a little of what’s on offer.

The girls poured over the slow section……asking about Paris mash, a term they weren’t familiar with ….ParisMash  the waitress said,  is basically creamy mashed potatoes with oodles of butter.

Then she added ‘Sometimes the chef here will add chopped Spring Onions for a bit of a bite!’

Added Spring Onions –  I couldn’t believe it.  Oh you mean like champ I said.
Doesn’t your chef know that’s basic Irish fare.

Champ is an Irish dish, made by combining mashed potatoes and chopped scallions (or spring onions)  with butter, milk and optionally, salt and pepper.

On the odd occasion my Dad cooked dinner champ was always on the menu.

Some would be delighted with this little snippet – they could go home and wow their families with Paris Mash and Champ – to me it will still be plain old mashed potatoes……sometimes with a little bit extra added to give it a bite!

With the spuds on the menu now having a classy name – certainly one that makes them appear more important than just another staple vegetable – what other veg do you call by a gastronomic term?

Say that again…

Isn’t this an impressive display…..seen in a shopping centre I don’t usually go to

With all the rain we had I wondered if they’d sold many pairs so spoke to one of the salesgirls…. Oops..salespeople 😊

‘Oh yes’ she said. ‘We’ve sold loads of the rain boots’

Pardon, I said don’t you mean gum boots?

Oh no, they are now known as rain boots or water boots. People think gum boots are old fashioned.  My little sister calls them Puddle Boots!

Oh dear, how on earth is an oldie like me going to remember that. Where I grew up they were called Wellington boots…..usually just Wellies. It took me years after we came here to refer to them like the locals did as gum boots!

My blue Wellies…or are they Rain boots…or Water boots….or Puddle boots??
What do you call yours?

The eyes have it….

A little gem from my inbox

Only have eyes for you

A man was dining alone in a fancy restaurant and there was a gorgeous redhead sitting at the next table. He had been checking her out since he sat down, but lacked the nerve to talk with her.

Suddenly she sneezed and her glass eye came flying out of its socket towards the man. He reflexively reached out, grabbed it out of the air, and handed it back.

‘Oh my, I am so sorry,’ the woman said, as she popped her eye back in place. ‘Let me buy your dinner to make it up to you.’

They enjoyed a wonderful dinner together, and afterwards they went to the theatre, followed by drinks. They talked, they laughed, she shared her deepest dreams and he shared his. She listened to him with interest.

After paying for everything, she asked him if he would like to come to her place for a nightcap and stay for breakfast. They had a wonderful, wonderful time.

The next morning, she cooked a gourmet meal with all the trimmings. The guy was amazed. Everything had been so incredible!

‘You know,’ he said, ‘you are the perfect woman. Are you this nice to every guy you meet?’

‘No,’ she replied. ‘You just happened to catch my eye !!

I’m sure you could come up with something like this 😊

Officially known as Powder the Plow Horse but often referred to as Steam Punk Clydesdale or Mechanical Horse.  Built by equine sculptor Dixie Jernett (whose website seems to no longer be available)

Here is a source of information on various (read that as many) interesting sculptures and installations around Calgary.

A Healthy Attitude…

I didn’t let busy times stop me from getting to the gym a couple of times last week plus having a dip in the warm water pool (which definitely helped my ‘difficult back) so hopefully I’m back in the swing of things again,

I really wonder why I get so lazy and can’t be bothered, then get annoyed at myself for not doing anything but I guess that’s just me – being a Libran doesn’t help either as we can get very lapsidasical and then worry because things aren’t right – something to do with the scales and being balanced and all that.

When we had all that recent rain and I couldn’t get out to walk I was thinking about a book I’d read awhile ago called ‘Prevention’s Complete Book of jWalking’.  Not exactly a new book, published in 2000, an easy read that talked about all sorts of things to do with walking, health and exercise.

Each ‘chapter’ was in several parts, not too long and very easy to digest, topics ranged from the healthy reasons for walking, walking for weight loss, walking in different weather conditions…..like here where we can get all four seasons in one day 😎

It was a book to be picked up and browsed over, then when the moment was right picked up again and read more thoroughly.  In a ‘fun chapter’ it talked about something which is now quite common place…..walking with poles.  Sometimes called Nordic Walking.  Many older people use them these days as an aid to help their balance while walking. The author described it as a simple, safe, enjoyable activity that uses almost all of your muscles in a single exercise session!

Now I don’t need to repeat my moans about the winter weather we have here in Melbourne at the moment – something that in my mind stops me from going out in the fresh air for that exercise I need.  But that same thing obviously was on my mind when I read the book because (and this is what reminded me of the book) I must have typed up the following little bit of information……taken from the book….and found recently while looking through word docs for something totally unrelated.

A WALKERS ATTITUDE

I woke up early today, excited about the day ahead. My health and well being are important and it is my job to decide to take care of myself. Its up to me to find the time, the place and the reasons to go for a walk.

Today I can complain because the weather is rainy, or ……
I can be thankful that my skin will be blessed with moisture.

Today I can feel sad that I have so many other things to do, or……….
I can be happy that I’ll have so much more energy to do them when I’m done walking

Today I can grumble over the temperature, or…
I can be thrilled that I’ve got the right clothes to deal with it.

Today I can whine because I have to find the time to walk, or….
I can shout for joy that my body is able to keep pace with my spirit

Today I can mourn my lack of walking partners, or…
I can revel in my quiet time alone.

What my health and fitness will be like is, in great measure, up to me. I get to choose my level of well being. I get to lay the plans for a daily walk.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Food for thought eh?  Have a great walk today…unless you have other plans 😊

Me – I shall have my coffee and muse over the above.  Then……well, it’s Monday, weather forecast says rain, so who knows??

What day did the sun shine?

On Sunday of course ☀️😎

Gloriously sunny…see there are shadows – and dry also.  After all the rain we had it was enough to tempt us to get out and head for the hills; so along with a few other Sunday drivers (not as many as we thought considering how dry and sunny it was) up the Maroondah Highway we went.

Making our way along the valley, the Yarra Valley, past paddocks with a few cattle, then on to stretches where more and more of the the roadside is lined with wineries. So many rises in the land are covered in vines….

….picking is finished and some of the vines appeared to be about to shed their leaves

……while they’re still hanging on for grim death on some other varieties

Here we are….about 20 minutes from home …at a small town called Healesville.

Located just under an hour from Melbourne and right in the centre of the Yarra Valley food and wine district, Healesville is also home to some of the region’s most talented artists. Visit some of the town’s galleries and studios, or partake in a leisurely lunch at one of the al fresco cafes and popular pubs.

https://visityarravalley.com.au/healesville

We weren’t here to eat or drink today – there was an exhibition on that I wanted to see at The Memo.  A free one at that 😊

It was an exhibition by the cartoonist ( satirist, social/political commentator) Michael Leunig   Born and raised in Melbourne – usually just known as Leunig – declared ( believe it or not) a national treasure in 1999!

The exhibits…..many more than I photographed…..were named…(on a flyer which I’ve misplaced) …..which made sense when looking at some trying to work out ‘the meaning of it all’…..all bar one for sale…..pricey…..yet I did see a few red stickers.

Click on the small gallery to see the weird and wonderful world of Leunig.

The decision….

Yes…the decision has been made

In five weeks time we’ll be in the car starting the 4 day drive ‘up north’

This year It was going to be a ‘quiet, spend time at home’ winter

That was until it got cold and wet which made us rethink that decision

So we thought about it and decided….yes. It was time to book our cabin in Bowen Far North Queensland

where once again for seven weeks

The Golfer can walk the golf course by the sea…….I can walk Queen’s Beach
on those Warm Winter’s Days……Collecting

Sea glass, Sand Dollars and tiny fragments of washed up Coral

They’re back….

It seemed like I had been here, there and everywhere

Scanning the shelves but to no avail

Then I spied them – little rays of sunshine on a cold winter’s day!

Looking fine from the top – and great from the bottom

Only thing to do now is see what it looked like inside

Absolutely perfect 🙂

In the shops now – Imperial mandarins – my favourite ray of sunshine during winter in Melbourne.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Did you know:- and I read this somewhere but can’t find the source….
Mandarins originated from southern China and were named after the Chinese officials of the Imperial court the “Mandarins” who used the fruit for various medicinal purposes.

Imperial mandarins are the first domestic mandarin variety to be harvested each year, picked April through to May. Imperials are refreshing and exuberantly orange in colour and are one of only a handful of popular varieties that originated here in Australia. The variety was first recognised in Sydney in 1890 and has since become the most popular mandarin on the market due to that sweet ‘everybody loves’ flavour. The easy to peel skin and minimal seeds, makes them a family favourite, great for snacks and school lunches.source

Fat free, saturated fat free, cholesterol free, sodium free, they are an excellent source of vitamin C and a good source of vitamin A
source

I prefer mandarins to oranges – What fruits do you enjoy more than others?

Does it have to be perfect……

My little coffee group of friends is minus one at the moment.  One of us is feeling the effects of a winter cold……she’s a bit poorly as they say and quite down in spirits (I did suggest getting her a bottle of one of her choice but was shouted down!)

We all listened to her coughing and spluttering on the phone…….actually you’ll have to imagine a group of us in the cafe, heads down to a phone on speaker trying to listen…….’oh I definitely feel my age’ she said ‘I feel like an old lady, just need a rocking chair and a warm blanket over my knees to complete the picture’  All of 82yrs old and more sprightly than many of us, this didn’t sound like B.

So what do we do, was the question.  Her daughter had put her in quarantine…..don’t want any of you ladies picking it up.  Don’t waste your money on flowers, was also mentioned….yes they are lovely but with the heating on they won’t last two secs.

Crafty people, most of us knitters, homemade knitted blanket for over he knees….the answer was there before us.  Of course, someone mentioned, it had to be perfect – B isn’t a sweet old lady, she is one of those get up and go old(er) ladies……so pastels were out of the question.  A mix of brights and also bright dark colours was agreed on.  Squares to be ready Monday – but which Monday?  Next Monday I got told!

Anyway after working flat out for countless hours thinking get well thoughts and humming some of the songs we know B likes BUT also muttering a few choice words about deadlines, about me being silly enough to choose a brightish but darkish blue from the stash (great to knit in daylight but deadly under artificial lights)….deciding not just to knit plain garter stitch but to put a pattern on them…….yes simple box designs but ones that involved counting…..AND needing them to be perfect in every way….. I finally handed over my contribution yesterday……Monday 😊

As I usually do I took a quick photo before I left home – looking at it later, guess what I saw.  A mistake!  Left front square – sixth pattern up.  I’ve miscounted!!

Oh B….I’m so sorry.

I’m just not perfect enough to make anything Perfect…..your blanket however, will have been made with lots of love and get well thoughts from all of us.

The first….

Yesterday was the First day of the month

Saturday June 1…..day 152 of this year 2019.

Yesterday was the First day of Winter here in Australia

It’s been so cold ski resorts have opened lifts early due to ‘dumps’……not for the First time though.  Earliest at Mt Buller (2 hrs up the road) was May 2009

Yesterday was also the First day it didn’t rain all week

For the First time in a little while it was comfortable enough to work out in the garden – as you can see the little Japanese Maple had developed die back in the middle.  The nursery said, First you must identify the reason before doing anything.

Could be this, could be that, prune at your own risk!  No idea of the cause – so I pruned – pruned hard – for the First time in a long time!

Yesterday was the First time I used a hot water bottle this year

We’re not fans of electric blankets, my toes were cold at bedtime – I couldn’t remember where I’d ‘hid’ it so had to go hunting. Found lurking beneath summer clothes in one of the wardrobes

Yesterday was the First time I’d been to a Tupperware party this century

It’ll probably be the last time as well

I’ll tell you what, the prices have gone up…… You’d need a bank loan to buy.

I didn’t buy!  Enuff said 😎
