What’ll it be….

April in Melbourne is what I call I call a half and half month.

While March often still has lingering warm sunny days and May usually heralds early winter with cool rainy days – the thought for April (the middle month of Autumn) is ‘will it bring sunshine or will it bring rain’?.

Thinking about all those little changes that seem to happen at this time of the year we’re halfway through the month and what has happened?
The clocks changed – it’s become cooler – we’ve had some much needed rain – daylight is just under 50/50 (11hrs) but it’s dark now at 6pm so I want my dinner earlier.

Lots of words there to think about

Focusing on health (healthy body – healthy (happy) mind as I ‘told myself’ at the beginning of the year) has continued although Easter and the school holidays cut into the end/beginning of last and this month meaning I avoided the pool but that just meant our bundle of resistance bands here at home were used more regularly than had been happening.

The ‘happy mind’ was evident when Christmas present time turned up again. Tickets to Riverdance from our girls – don’t you love people who received the memo about giving experiences rather than gifts. And managed to get matinee seats so us oldies didn’t have to be out and about after dark😊.
As is normal these days no photography allowed during performances- the screens of anyone trying would have very obvious in the darkened Margaret Court Arena so this was just to show the girls the view we had. Three rows back, raised up from floor level – no worries of anyone’s big head spoiling the view. I did take a couple of the arena as it filled but won’t publish (faces looking my way)

Oh and don’t you love it when Melbourne transport whisks all those ‘happy’ theatre goers into town by train and then down to the tennis centre (Melbourne Park) by tram. No hassles at all – smiling faces all round

No choir during school holidays but my happy mind will be raring to go on Wednesday. We’ll be gearing up for concerts at aged care homes……age requirements mean residents must be over 65…..which is certainly not ‘old’ – in fact it be any one of us in the choir……so the ‘music/songs’ performed is slowly changing.
And even though (latest figures I found say that) ‘58% of people living in permanent residential aged care were aged over 85’ we think they would appreciate modern standards – musicals – even Elvis and The Beatles.

I’ve been told these two are on the running sheet for the first rehearsal:-

Dream a Little Dream of Me – 1931.
(Mamas and Papas 1968)

So far so good
Temperature tonight 8c/45f so the warm and cosy sheets will go on soon
I know it will get dark earlier and light later
let’s just hope it doesn’t get too cold and too wet
To accept this seasonal change I need be able to enjoy the falling leaves

Monday Musings – a time to think and ponder

What are you thinking about this Monday morning?

  1. Thank you for these thoughts. It is definitely getting cooler overnight here (we got down to 2C a couple of nights last week) but the days are mostly bright and sunny. Perfect for much needed garden work if I had the energy.

  2. Being on the opposite side of the world, April is also a 50/50 month but generally trending in the other direction. I say generally – we were caught in a small sleet flurry just yesterday! But the blossom on the trees is coming out and we’ve had some of our first warm, sunny days.

    1. Spring/Autumn are always coming and going seasons aren’t they. Teasers- ‘look at what you could have, I’ll give you a taste but sorry you’ll have to wait a while’

  3. I love the cooler weather, and welcome it with open arms. And I love music. Music is a place one can escape to, and an escapism valve is needed more and more the days with all the horrors that surrounds us, here in our own country, and worldwide.

    Take good care, Cathy.

    1. What’s that old saying Joanne everything comes to those who wait. It’ll change in its own good time – and I bet it’ll be worth the wait when it happens

  4. Hi. Yes April is an in between month over here in the West too – your description of it is spot on although we are back to 30+ days with a 35 for mid week – just when I have packed all my summer shorts away too!

  5. Definitely no hot ones on the horizon here. Can’t see my shorts coming out for a while yet – I think they’re still in the ironing basket!

  6. I just love Mama Cass Elliot (and that song). Cold here too – temperatures here have been up and down like the proverbial ….. drawers. We didn’t really get freezing all winter, but it is so wet and waterlogged that the soil is simply not warming up with the spring. We so agree with the experiences not things memo – got tickets for Kew Gardens and a membership at Royal Horticultural Society this year. Perfect for happy mind.

    1. People never seem to tire of hearing this soft ‘dreamy’ tune. Such a simple sentiment behind it. Think about me when we’re apart

  7. Hi Cathy pleased to find you again, you seem to have slipped off my reader list. Still very warm up here but a bit cooler at night. I relish the cooler days of autumn, but so far a bit hit and miss. Yes we are definitely matinee people now . What. Great present. I agree experiences not things is the way to go .

    1. I can’t remember the last time we were at an evening performance of anything. It would need a night in town if we did it again- with a bed close to the theatre.

Lovely to hear from you Pauline – thanks for returning my call

  8. The music takes me back to growing up – well not Frank Sinatra but the MaMa’s and the PaPa’s. I love autumn so now I will enjoy yours. Our part of the US is very dry and unseasonably warm. I picked a sprig of lilac yesterday. I’m thinking about when to plant my tomato plants and cucumber seeds. I think it will be earlier than usual.

    1. Mmm lilac has a smell that is so noticeable- once smelt never forgotten. My thoughts on Autumn will be nowhere as inspiring as your words about Spring

  9. I’ve moved to a city where “trees” are all over – and of course autumn is upon us. Leaves, and more leaves every which way. Here at the village the tree outside my door, isn’t even “thinking of falling” apparently it’s the last to drop and the last to spring forward. But it seems to be windy and a tree about 30′ away is blowing many gorgeous leaves over to my door…

  10. Hi Cathy, the mornings and evenings are definitely getting cooler up here although the days are still warm. We are off to Stanthorpe in a couple of weeks and hopefully I can wear my winter clothes! I love the cold weather! Our transport in Brisbane isn’t as sophisticated as Melbourne’s hopefully the cross river rail will improve getting around. Have a lovely week, Cathy x

    1. Ooh Sue, Stanthorpe will be chilly. Isn’t it referred to as ‘the coldest town in Qld’? Cool weather clothes will definitely be needed.

  11. Hi Cathy, it’s still pretty warm here in Brisbane but I’ve noticed the mornings particularly are a little cool now. I love the cooler weather! Bring it on! Riverdance would’ve been fantastic to see and yes I agree that experiences are what we need more than things! Thanks so much for linking up with #WWWhimsy – hope you have a great week! xo

    1. I don’t mind the cool coldish nights Jo, if it stays sunny and dry in daytime. Have to remember this is Melbourne – unpredictable possibly 4 seasons in one day. Might need light clothes- might need your ‘big coat’. Hopefully the weather gods will be kind to you (and me, who is not a cold weather lover and spends a good part of winter in FNQ)

      Enjoy your time here!

  12. Loved your post and so glad you got such good seats. I know we too are in that ‘long pants/shorts’ days here in Sydney in April. Often starting the day to stay warm means later on shedding to become cooler.

I am finding music a memory of endearment and grief in one where it reminds me of Dad. He was a huge sharer of music from all eras and I inherited that interest too.

    Take care,

    Denyse

  13. I love your happy mind, Cathy! Here in the US, we are heading into spring, but I agree April is a half and half month, the first half has a tendency to drift more often back to winter weather, but the second half is more likely to see warmer days and much more color. Just typing that makes me smile. #WWWhimsy
