End of season….

We’re definitely coming to the end of the Mandarin season here and all of a sudden the fruit & veg department in a certain supermarket seems to be flooded with a single variety. I have never tasted this variety so I’m not judging the fruit itself…..my favoured one is Imperial which is available just for a short while early in the season.

Anyway you can buy this particular fruit loose (complete with its own little plastic sticky identifying label) from the market style displays doted around the fruit & veg dept. The fruit is as it comes from the supplier – as picked, various sorts of sizes so you’re free to choose how many you want/like the look of.
Keep that $3.90 kg price in mind…..

If you want your fruit all the same size and don’t want the hassle of picking through and choosing, just wander to another section and you will find these there. For just a little more you can have all the same size bagged ready to pick up and pop in your trolley….

But hang on, did you noticed the weight. It’s only 750gms not a kg……
……..which if you look at extra price on the label (mandatory unit pricing) means it works out to $6.43 kg

I wonder if the actual fruit inside the peel tastes any different to those that cost about $2.40 kg less

Remembering when…..

A little rearranging in the linen press aka the hall cupboard means the warm cosy winter sheets have been moved to the front and cool cotton summer ones are now ‘resting’ at the back. We’ve had these several years now and they definitely have to be one of my best buys ever. I still chuckle thinking about the day I first sighted them
********

Sales time in a bedding store, I’d picked up all the ‘bargains’ I wanted and was in the check out line all ready to ‘tap and go’ when this slogan caught my eye.
Sleep warm and cosy with this soft touch sheet set

Does anyone remember a few years ago when  soft and cuddly bedding was what I wanted but what I ended up with were sheets like velcro ? I had brought them out of hibernation for another chance turn on the bed….but even with silky pjs on it still felt like trying to roll over on velcro…..the decision was that they maybe possibly were definitely going to the op shop!

So warm and cosy in soft touch sheets sounded very interesting 😊

A little fondle of the sample and I was hooked.
It reminded me of the brushed nylon sheets we had back in the 1960s, similar…..not the same, thicker but softer.
…..They are constructed from washed microfibre that gives them a relaxed look and soft texture. These everyday sheets are lightweight, easy to care for and naturally wrinkle resistant…..
Oh I’m easily pleased
One queen size set went into the trolley!

I was definitely pleased.
They were smooth, warm and cosy with not a hint of velcro to be found, they received both mine and The Golfer’s seal of approval … so much so that after a week of sleeps with them on the bed in my silky pjs, then a look at how they laundered, I nipped back to the shop and came home with another set!
*******

I have been thinking about this over my early cup of tea and realise that over the years I’ve never given much thought to sleepwear and bedding – you needed it so bought it. Soft warm comfortable pjs are a ‘well into retirement’ necessary requirement as is soft warm/cool comfortable bedding. If my mother discovered what my thoughts on both of those things were she’d say I was going soft in my old age ~ but golly, it’s good to be pampered now and again isn’t it.

Spare parts dept…

After I’d emailed my cousin about the new hearing aid purchases, she (because she’s like me and ‘holds on to ‘things’ ) forwarded to me an email I wrote years ago
********

November 2016

Hello there Heather

There’s going to be another division of the spare parts dept in our household opening soon.

The trial period is over and the verdict is – I’ll take one (or even two) !!

I have had a pair on trial for the past week and among other things discovered my neighbours to the left of us have a couple of budgies and more birds spend time in our trees and bushes than I realised.  It’s amazing what a difference a little thing stuck behind your ear can make 🙂

Yes, after having the eyes renewed a couple of years ago (cataracts) it’s now time to bring the ears in line.  No need to shout, it’s the pesky high sounds that I’m losing – a nice lady at Australian Hearing called it High Frequency Hearing Loss.
She’s been monitoring this very slow decline in both ears for a few years now and suggested a trial run of a loan tailored to my requirements so I could actually see hear the difference.

So come the New Year (because I can get a better health benefit payout) I shall be the proud new owner of two tiny little things that will mean I make less mistakes in thinking I heard something when it was actually something else that was said 🙂

How I get on with this remains to be seen because mentioning it to friends has brought forth lots of horror stories about things whistling in the dark (as well as in the ear), hearing being worse than before and ‘Uncle Joe” still not being able to hear at the pub so I’m taking them all with a grain of salt.

Over the past few years B & P (my sisters) have both had new hips – several friends acquired new knees – many friends have had new sets of teeth – yet nobody has admitted to having new ears.  What is about deafness (no matter how slight) that we are loathe to admit to?

How will I cope with these new appliances?  I don’t know. We shall see what happens when the time comes. 🙂
*******

So back to today over 8yrs on…..I’m even more enthralled with the new world they opened up. The new ones are the same ‘level’ as before (my loss hasn’t altered much in that time) but technology has
The only thing the consultant was surprised about was that I declined a rechargeable device preferring batteries – we’re all different, my reasoning being it’s what I’m used to and one less thing to worry about when travelling. The packs of tiny batteries are much much smaller than the charger and no need to find a power point

Anyway enough about me:-
How do you view ageing and the decline of body parts?

Everything old is new again – a trip to the spare parts dept!

Does it bother you or are you glad there are ‘things’ out there to lessen the burden

What thoughts are roaming round your head this Monday?

Would you like something to go with your coffee……

Lemon coconut slice?

What do you think?

After the appointment I’d just had at the hearing centre I certainly needed it…..tell you what…..you can add hearing aids to the list of items that have definitely risen quite steeply in price. Granted my trusty Signia ones, the ones I’ve used for the past 7yrs – (once I accepted I needed them in certain circumstances) – do work just fine, they really needed to be updated. Talk about sticker shock!

So the March Equinox been and gone – another quarter turn of the wheel happened – and Autumn has truly arrived…..days and nights here at home are about equal at the moment

but that loss of light will soon become very apparent. ……
These are the times for Friday 7:29 am Sunrise – 7:20pm Sunset.
Another 9 mins gone!

And while my whinging complaining won’t stop all that happening there is something I do enjoy about this season.
.
Brussel Sprouts — fresh from the farm!

Look at them, planted just up the road from us in the paddocks along the Maroondah Highway at Coldstream, lined up in straight rows as far as the eye can see…… so easy for the picking gangs to harvest them.

I know I’m in the minority who really do enjoy eating them and look forward to adding another vegetable to our plates.
Have to be cooked plainly though – steamed then served with a dab of butter (salt/pepper optional).

No oven or frying pan involved – no weird and wonderful ingredients added – I’ve seen olive oil, honey, soy sauce, lemon juice even Parmesan cheese mentioned. Do those things and I’ll not even look at them never mind eat them!

Here’s Arthur the Big Sprout waiting to greet us as we drove in last week to pick up some new season from the farm gate shop

Monday’s here again…..gosh that week went by quickly…….
…. Blink and you missed it….

How was yours? Fast and Furious or Slow and Steady?

Sharing with Wednesday Words and Whimsy found HERE

When will it end…..

A few things I’ve been thinking about……

I have missed my weekly walking in water exercise- it’s now about 3 months since the ‘pool’ was closed for what was described as ‘essential maintenance’ which has turned out to be a much larger undertaking than anyone expected. I’m sure I’m not the only one wondering ‘when will it end’

As was – end of November
End of December
End of January

It’s been revealed reopening is now planned for the end of March which can’t come soon enough for me. I’ve been happy enough to use the gym facilities for the active adult’s sessions but it certainly doesn’t seem to have the same effect as the gentle fluid movements in the water does.
I realise it’s a case of muscles being worked in a different manner but I’m a bit like the toddler who wants the red cup and not the identical but different coloured blue one in that I know what I like and won’t be happy until I get it 😊

When will it end…

I was muttering those words to myself after finishing this couple of rather long books. Both historical fiction – both 2024 publications
The Wartime Book Club – 512 pages plus extra information .
The Fallen Woman – 448 pages

I seem to have had a knack recently of finding things to read that ‘seemed like a good idea at the time’ mainly because others had said ‘they’re a great read, you’ll love them’. With these two, apart from not being able to connect with any of the main characters (all female) in either book I got the feeling that if the authors had researched something then it had to be included. Sometimes Less is more although I’m sure some publishers would disagree.

When will it end…..

I have been wondering when will we stop worrying if we have something more than we actually have?

It would appear all I’m suffering from is a common old cold!

My headache- runny nose – weepy eyes – sneezing- some coughing…..are just that……symptoms of a cold.

One of my very expensive antigen tests – well I certainly didn’t think $38 for 5 of these newfangled all singing all dancing ones was cheap when I needed them for The Golfer last December – has reassured me that (at that particular time yesterday) I wasn’t suffering from Covid or RSV or even Influenza A/B.
That will certainly make life a little easier – hot honey&lemon with the odd paracetamol and maybe a slug of cough mixture now and again should see me through……..unless things turn nasty 🙁

How about you….what are you wondering about today?

Going up….and down….

I’m beginning to wonder (like just about every other person) when will these horrendous price rises end.

Remember the lemons ($9.90 kg December 2024) – last week they’d risen to $14.99 kg – almost double the price. Which is why little bottles like this one are flying off the shelves……you do wonder who’s making the money though

Also….I will admit to having a big grin on my face as I drove past the petrol station recently. There’s one thing we can’t get away from and that’s the ‘fuel up and down’ cycle that goes on here in many of our cities……unlike food prices that never go down after they’ve risen the cost of petrol will slowly fall a few days after what seems like – well actually is – an enormous jump in price.

The big sign said ULP 91 was $1.97 litre……I’d filled up the day before at $1.69. 😊
A 30¢ jump overnight can be horrendous for some drivers – especially those entitled ones who drive whopping great gas guzzling vehicles……so it’s best to be aware of how long the price has been low and top up before you discover It ended yesterday!

I noticed it didn’t take long after the Reserve Bank announced (today) it had lowered the cash rate (which had been rising for several years) for some of the big banks to lower their interest rates on savings accounts. Not much has been said about when mortgage rates will actually drop (and by how much) which is probably uppermost in people’s minds more so than what they’d get on their savings (if they had any)

There is one group who won’t be too pleased about the cuts though and that’s self- funded retirees and those on part pensions. They are dependent on interest from savings and investments so will be looking at a loss in income.

I wonder if it will please the ‘cafe owners’ who have complained non stop about not being able to make ends meet……rising mortgages meant some regular customers were cutting out their ‘daily’ takeaway coffees – now some retirees who became regular customers won’t be able to afford them either.

Us…..well having no mortgage has meant no worries and the extra interest on savings has been good but we’re more interested in the currency exchange rate. Some of our income is from overseas pensions which can vary due to the exchange rate. If we receive more – our Aus pension is cut a fraction – so we never know exactly what we’re going to get . It’s been a constant amount recently- let’s hope it stays that way.

🧶 Is there an end in sight……

(Long post – skip to the end for the short version 😊)

I took this very early in February – thinking I was being clever by beginning a Christmas gift (at the end of January) ……one of my favourite knits – for little Mia. (Born Nov 2024)

Her mother has what you might call a shopping problem which means there is a full 12 months worth of clothes in the wardrobe just waiting for her to grow into so I’ve sized for 18/24 months……hopefully she’ll get some wear out of it the winter after next.
(reminder – Winter in Aus is in the middle of the year not at the end😊)

And the state of play now – over two weeks later……exactly the same🙁.
Well apart from reading the book – that’s finished

Actually there was a lot going on that day…..it was a scorcher, one from the heatwave that crossed the country that week – more fires were cropping up in the Grampian region (western Victoria) and in Far North Queensland towns along the east coast were being flooded – such strange weather.

Since then it’s been all fun and games (not) and being glad each of us has been there for the other – we’ve had more scorchers (which knowing my love of warm weather you didn’t hear me say I’m glad to see the back of)…..the rains seem to have to have eased off up north but the effects of flooding will linger for quite a while……and fires have been appearing in other places. There have been cooler days (one extreme to the other last Saturday when it was cold with a high of 11°out our way) but Summer really has been full bent on letting us know who’s the boss!

*********

Anyway I was certainly glad The Golfer was there the day I stood up and went whoopsie – not quite flat on my face thankfully – because he happened to be standing there right beside me when my leg just gave way under me. Oh lor did it hurt, swollen knee, any attempt to walk on that leg resulted in a tippy toe awkward hobble – much sitting around until I had an X-ray plus ultrasound.

  • Result ~ Small knee joint effusion. Bulging of the medial meniscus. Small amount of fluid in the deep infrapatellar bursa…..probably age related!

The Golfer was glad I was able play designated driver before that happened..….the car park at The Golfers eye specialist was full so I dropped him off, took my book and waited in a shady spot elsewhere – expecting a surgery date for cataract. He has a date but for injections in one eye. Not for macular degeneration but something that showed up during an X-ray (OCT) so that’s on the back burner for now until this problem is sorted.

  • Here’s hoping all is finished before June when the ‘long drive up north’ begins.

But wait – you know that saying about things coming in three…..yes, there’s more but I don’t think you really want to hear me moaning and groaning about the male of the house (there’s enough bloggers like that out there)

  • So let’s just say the panel beaters couldn’t fit The Golfer’s repair in for another few weeks….. thankfully the car is drivable so seeing the damage each time he gets in during that time should remind him of how close you can drive next to an immovable object without making a dent in your bank balance. Insurance covered it but there’s that rather large 💰💰💰excess to be paid.

******

How are you all?

I’ll admit to not doing the ‘blog’ rounds – I needed a break from everything.
I don’t have a book on the go at the moment but I did read loads during the time I was offline…..I’ll tell you about them sometime soon

Short version says – it’s been rather (a bit too) hot here, hotter still with consequences somewhere else and rained a lot up there.. ……I haven’t done much knitting but have read lots, stuffed up my knee (much better now) The Golfer ‘put a dent in both his car and bank balance, plus will get a jab in the eye soon 😊

🧶What about you….

Three weeks you say – yes, it’s been three weeks since I mentioned knitting
I’ve been thinking you might think that’s all I do
So I haven’t said a word about it for three whole weeks

But just in case you have been wondering what I’ve been up to
With my knitting that is
I’ll tell you that….

I finally finished the 4yr old which ended up being one of those ‘seemed like a good idea at the time but my heart really wasn’t in it’ things

I had a lot of fun knitting this the first time round and perhaps it was a bad choice for the ‘challenge’ but look nothing ventured nothing gained. And I certainly wasn’t going to rip it out and start something easier

December 2022

And as I’m still in my ‘make something simple’ by ‘using it up’ mood it means I’ve just about finished a classic style boys jumper which by adding stripes of various sizes means I’ve just about used up all the Grey and Royal Blue left overs. It does look very ‘boyish’ but that doesn’t mean it couldn’t be worn by a girl

And the book Women of a certain rage – Various authors edited by Liz Byski 2021.

Blurb:- This book is the result of what happened when Liz Byrski asked 20 Australian women from widely different backgrounds, races, beliefs and identities to take up the challenge of writing about rage.

It was an op shop (charity/thrift) find, spotted and almost grabbed off the shelf after another person ‘pinched’ the car spot I was after. Saw the empty space as I drove into the car park, had my blinker on but she came in the other direction and just snuck in – I thought she was going to drive past so I could move in – but no, she just turned her wheels and snuck in there, right in front of me!
Settle down Catherine it was only a spot in a car park – it wasn’t your fault there wasn’t another one to be seen and you had to drive around looking for one. Rage does terrible things to your blood pressure 😡

******.
Last week I parcelled up these as well as a few other similar newborn sets plus everything else in the ‘box’ and dropped them off at a collection point so hopefully by now they’re making their way across town to the charity HQ. .
I’ve just noticed in the photo that many of the stitches on the blue cardigan look like they’re going ‘any which way but where they’re supposed to be’ – they don’t look like that in real life.
Trying to block acrylic yarn often results in a flat out of shape garment so better to not try than end up in tears.

So what are you up to.
‘What’s on your needles’ as the saying goes.
Have you been sewing, knitting, crocheting or making anything you’d be willing to tell us about? And have you come across any books you’d like to tell us about?

Noticing….

And slowly we are beginning to notice the season is changing.
It’s taken such a while for Summer to make itself known that it comes as a bit of a shock to realise Autumn officially begins this Friday coming – a couple of days time!
Day light isn’t appearing until nearly 6.30am and it’s dark by 8.30pm. We aren’t going to be happy when the temperatures really start to dip and warmer clothes get worn more often.

The little Melaleucas that line the pool car park bloomed – hardly at all. Very few ‘flower heads’ on the bushes. I saw these a couple of weeks ago but last week they had all gone. Just the seed heads left

Bookings have been confirmed for the yearly winter retreat to Far North Queensland.
Yes it’s several months away but our preferred motel accommodation on the road needs to be secured early. A deposit has been paid on the cabin..

Apart from the inevitable rate rises we’ve noticed a definite trend towards tightening up terms and conditions with regards to future bookings and establishment losses. More motels are asking for ‘cash up front then a possible refund’ rather than the ‘24hr notice before charges are made on credit card.’
The van park in Bowen has now declared (for their long term seasonal cabin bookings) 30 days notice of any change in arrival dates as well as 30 days notice if you want to leave earlier than agreed. Plus a whole weeks accommodation deposit rather than the 1 day as used to be.
Going the way of cruise lines whose refund policies start at 90days!

Surely there’s another way

Monday’s post brought some ‘interesting’ forthright comments from some readers – strangely they chose to email their opinions /suggestions instead of posting them here on the blog

That’s just silly, surely you don’t have to go through all that rigmarole each time you want to go in that direction

You don’t need that stress while driving, there has to be another way

Why don’t you take another route

Well yes, there are ways to bypass the roundabout – for example, let’s say I want to go to the library in Mooroolbark or the train station on Brice Avenue just across from the library.

These are the roads I’d usually take from home, it’s the most direct way – drive to Cambridge Road then the same way I described before

(The roundabouts are where Hull Road and Cambridge Road meet)

Click/ tap or finger slide to enlarge

You’ll have to imagine that the twisty turny bendy streets coming off slightly wider roads are filled with suburban homes so driving here might look easy but there are local (slower) speed limits, parked cars to be manoeuvred around (more people in some households owning cars) and believe it or not some mums still walk littlies to the nearby local primary school or kinder (not every household has two cars)

Going on slightly ‘straighter’ roads still means local streets, crossing over oncoming traffic and waiting at traffic lights that work in conjunction with another intersection slightly further up the road

And this is the easiest (less stressful for some) way
But almost twice as far to drive!

The Golfer occasionally goes that way – I prefer the roundabout way😊

Australia Day

Over the years there have been/were rumblings about Australia wanting/needing a new national anthem’.
God save the King (Queen) had been used since Federation in 1901.

The Australian National Anthem and Flag Quests Committee, a non-government body, launched a competition for a new national flag and anthem in August 1971. By Australia Day 1972 over 400 hundred entries had been received.
source

Different ‘songs’ were put forward at different times and it took many more years before Advance Australia Fair was decided on.

One of the earlier candidates was called God bless Australia.

God Bless Australia was a proposed 1961 Australian national anthem by Australian songwriter Jack O’Hagan who provided patriotic lyrics to the traditional tune of Waltzing Matilda. source

This is it – a very emotive, nationalistic, tugging at the heartstrings song that dare I say, in certain ways it sounds very similar to a song associated with another country!

Happy Australia Day everyone- enjoy today January 26th 2024

🧶 Things that made me smile. . .

Friday I packed Christmas away – taking it all down slowly brought the same Memory Lane smiles as putting it up
There was the looking at, touching, reminding myself of where things came from smiles as well as who was with me happy (and sad) thoughts.

Deciding on using two trees this year just meant it took a little bit longer.

The ‘small tree’ is always set up on the hall table but the ‘big tree’ hasn’t made an appearance for several years now and wasn’t going to this year either except I had a ‘fit of the sentiments’ (as my mother would say for any unusual behaviour in us girls) and brought it indoors to enjoy for possibly the last time.

But having said that, I actually felt it quite comforting seeing it dressed and ‘twinkling’ away in the corner – especially in the evening just as the light outside was slowly fading.

Plus listening to grown, now very much adult in their 20s grandchildren oohing and aahing over baubles and other decorations (oh grandma I remember this one) makes me think this might not have been its swansong after all 😊

So as I said I went slowly, taking my time, making sure nothing was left behind – not tempting fate or encouraging bad luck – because the next day
Saturday was Twelfth Night!

*******.
Then there was this past weekend when hot humid days ( the ones referred to in the constant severe weather warnings) turned into humid wet days culminating in a torrential stormy yesterday (Monday). There was flooding and associated storm damage locally as well as many places statewide- some still reeling from their last bout of flooding. Locally we ended up with 50mm of rain but various country towns received over 100mm – nothing to smile about there!Poor Rochester still trying to rebuild after last year’s floods is being evacuated again !.

You do begin to wonder why the BOMdeclared El Niño had returned (meaning a long hot dry summer) since starting from the beginning of December with Cyclone Jasper in Qld, the whole east coast NSW Victoria as well as SA have been inundated with wet stormy weather.

Anyway, putting all that aside (not that you can really) no cricket on tv and we’re ‘tennised out’ for the time being – (the United Cup, Brisbane & Canberra International have all finished, Adelaide and Hobart are on the go plus qualifying for the AO has just begun) . .
. . so spent yesterday safe and dry outside on the back deck. I had another idea for using up soft coloured leftovers and The Golfer had just started The Seven – Chris Hammer’s latest book.
We were both enjoying the carolling concert put on by a magpie who’d taken refuge from the pouring rain (not unusual- they often pop in and fly off) when there’s a whoosh and squark – one bedraggled cocky has arrived! .
This is going to be interesting I thought.
Each is a wild bird and I wasn’t sure whether they would tolerate each other being so close

They both sat there for a while- almost trying to outdo each other in the noise they were making. The Cockatoo kept looking at the Magpie – who just kept on carolling. The cocky looked at us as if for some sort of support

Then it went quiet – Maggie had flown off and cocky was sitting there with a ‘butter wouldn’t melt in her mouth ’ look

Of course he didn’t stay that way for long and sauntered over to entertain us as though he owned the place. Smiles all round as we sat there watching his ‘routine’ – then he tootled off over to join his mates in the big gum tree at the back.

There was so much noise coming out of that tree I’m sure he was bragging about being ‘comfy and warm’ while they all flew around looking for a dry spot to rest up 😊

What’s the connection?

Is anybody able to tell me the connection between Bambi and Santa?

Back when I was growing up in England I don’t remember any Father Christmas with Bambi advertising- maybe it’s just a North American thing

Or maybe I’ve just forgotten 😋

Slight change of plan. . .

It’s Wednesday again
the first Wednesday in a new month
The first Wednesday in December 2023
Which means it is the first
Wednesday in Summer in Australia

And guess what – after all our whinging and complaining about seasons being late. . it really felt as though summer had finally arrived yesterday 😎

I haven’t actually been ‘sick’ as in incapacitated these past few weeks just inconvenienced (and very cheesed off)
Thinking laterally I changed hair products as well as left off any skin care products but that didn’t appear to make much difference.

Anyway over the weekend after family remarked on the red eyes – and wheezy chest – I gave in and decided a trip to the GP was needed.

So now we are considering an allergy
To what we don’t know

It was early November when it first became a problem but as it became like a moveable feast, not constant but coming and going, I really didn’t think it was pollen related.
The GP has suggested I might be wrong though.

And because my usual ‘lubricating dry eye drops’ are having no effect, from yesterday I’m trialling some recommended allergy eye drops. Albalon A

And guess what – yes – they are feeling much better!

*******

My hairdresser usually decorates the salon in bright Christmasy colours – change of plan this year. Silver elegance is how she described it

I need one of these. . .

Have been a bit out of sorts recently
Not sure what ‘I’ve picked up’ – tired, headache, red itchy/weepy eyes.
(It’s been difficult to visit, read, comment – anywhere – even here).

So I’m taking a wee one

Have a break – Have a KitKat – – History

Hopefully I’ll be back next week sometime
