Andrew (From the Highrise) had a post last week showing huge statues he’d seen in the forecourt of the NGV – which reminded me of this (very difficult to photograph statue) that was in the same spot a few years ago
It was really really tall – really really wide
and did I say really really hard to photograph
GONE – Bronze statue – by KAWS
The work is an emotional depiction of loss, with the pose reminiscent of that in the famous Renaissance sculpture by Michelangelo, Pieta, 1498-99, which depicts the lifeless Christ cradled in his mother Mary’s arms, after the crucifixion.

Such an emotive piece.

Maybe all evocative statues are hard to photograph. The artist made them 3D because 2D just wouldn’t cut it – couldn’tconvey the message or emotion. (Just a thought)

I saw an exhibition of KAWS work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park back in 2016, the sheer scale of the statues and the emotion portrayed, despite what are seemingly fairly blank faces and conventional postures, is quite something isn’t it? (Once you get over the resemblance to Mickey Mouse).
