Backyard Builds…

Seeing this little ‘rustic’ outdoor area on a blog recently
brought back all sorts of memories of the time (a few years ago now) I asked The Golfer if he’d build me a little summer house (to use in the winter)

What I had in mind was something like this 👇 – maybe not so large- but light and airy so I could enjoy our winter sunshine and not be cooped up indoors

‘Let me think about it’ was all I got
A week later it changed to ‘won’t be anywhere near that size and definitely not made from new doors & windows!’.
Then he asked ‘does it have to have closing doors?’
*****
Then he asked if I knew anyone doing home renovations- changing doors or even windows- demolishing an old house even – sorry no
OK I’ll call into some builders yards – you know those salvage yards where they sell all that second hand stuff.
No such thing as ‘looking online’ then
*****
Then it was ‘do they all have to match??’
What about something like this – describing a sitting area like these below .
‘Interesting’ I said, seeing my ‘dream’ diminish

Out came a quick sketch of something much smaller, plus ‘all we need is four doors, a bit of wood for the roof and maybe a pallet for the floor’.
But you might be waiting a bit because
have you seen the price of second hand doors and windows ???

Needless to say I never did get my little summer house😎.

  1. i love them ALL and would take any of them. my 2 favorites are the 2 just above the last photo. but i would need doors that close or screen doors.. have you thoughat bout the canvas gazebos? a blogger I follow has a fred standing one with curtains that she can open or leave, she decorates it like a room and they eat out there sometimes. maybe a canvas tent. things are sooo expenvive, used or new

  2. I am back with a free idea…. how about a very large side by side refrigerator BOX… cut windows and a door and hang curtains.😉😉

  3. All the summer houses you have shown us look so adorable but somehow it seems to me to be impossible to replicate this shabby, eclectic, sweet looking aesthetic. Mine always ends up looking like a dogs breakfast.
    Maybe you dodged a bullet?

  4. Not so much for me, but for our cats…they would love such a “hideout” in the backyard. They do have a large, furnished patio, just off the family room, but a separate little building would be fun, too.

  5. These are adorable!! I’d love this…but spiders and rats might want one too…Ahh, Australia. #WWWHIMSY (Clearly I have trauma from my childhood cubby house.A funnelwebs delight…we had to let mum ‘baygon it’ before we could enter….

    1. Big smiles Lydia at the thought of your poor mum having to play exterminator each time you all wanted to play in the cubby.
I’ve never seen rats the whole 50yrs we’ve been in this house but there could have been a cat or two visit my little summerhouse- if I’d had one that is😊

    1. There was loads of room at the time Sue….not anymore now. Trees, shrubs, garden beds cover the ground. I’m content with the covered deck which has clear blinds that give protection from the winter weather. That little’house’ would have been nice though😊

  6. Hi Cathy, oh I waiting for the photo at the end of his creation! All of those pictured are so gorgeous and inviting and would be wonderful! There’s no room at our house for a summerhouse because most of our backyard is pool! It’s nice to dream though isn’t it? Thank you so much for your support and for linking up with #WWWHIMSY xo

    1. I tried but it never did eventuate Min – like you there’s no room for it now. Too many trees and bushes planted – can’t complain because they are great for shade in the summer and we do have a covered deck which is sheltered so pretty good for the winter. But a little summer house would have been just right 😊

  7. These are lovely little buildings Cathy! I’m lucky to have a sunroom in my backyard and use it in winter for the reasons you state, light, airy, warm and inviting. Love the whimsy of your post #WWWhimsy

    1. lol whenever I get a glimpse of your garden room in a photo my mind goes back to the time I asked The Golfer to make me one. Too many garden beds now so there’s no room to put one in – would’ve been nice though
