🧶Oh woe is me, I am undone…

Or at least there’s a fair chance of that happening!

So…..I’ve been working on this little guernsey over the past week or so, thinking …..that considering all the ‘stuff’ (aka creative supplies) brought up with me I really should take at least one finished garment home with me.

It would have been the end of July I last picked it up so making an effort to get back into the swing of it and cabling merrily along I’m thinking it must be nearly time to cast off for the shoulders – WRONG – as you can see the back is done already…..I’m supposed to be knitting the front! .

So…..when I retrieve it from the bag I shoved it inthe corner where I slung it in disgust …….so when I next pick it up I will undo the unnecessary rows and carry on finishing it.
Trying to see something positive in this situation I suppose you could say that one ‘good thing’ is that the rows going up each side of the neck will be shorter and they always seem to knit up faster because you’re decreasing for the neckline!

*****.
The weather has changed again- I mentioned it was raining early last week, at the time it was just a little bit……a little bit that developed into a lot (think tropical downpours) over the next couple of days…….that front moved on down the coast with Brisbane and the south east corner ‘copping it bad’.

Now our days are becoming very warm (27/28c – 80f) with the dreaded humidity plus layers of sea fog all along the coast like you’ve never seen before…well you have but there’s a certain magic each time you do. It’s deceiving how wide and tall the band of fog can be – there is a very large island to the right of each photo – completely obscured in the top one!

Casualties of the east coast egg shortage are the homemade cakes most of the local cafes sell.
Old fashioned ‘eggless’ recipes are being hunted down and a different range of ‘goodies’ are appearing in the ‘ooh, they look good – I’ll have one of those with my coffee’ display cabinets.

And, don’t laugh, as if Queensland didn’t have enough to contend with ….thanks to those unseasonal rains there will now be a strawberry shortage

Casualties of my recent ‘ I’m not really enthralled with these books’ mood are Tom Lake and Sunset Shadows (secrets, lies and murders in the Australian wilderness) courtesy of the van park ‘laundry room’…….
unfortunately like quite a few books I’ve picked up recently these aren’t ‘gripping me’ so will probably find themselves keeping the washers and dryers company again fairly soon

But all is not lost- what I have done is download a copy of this ……A Certain Age Lynne Truss…..a dozen short (humorous) stories (actually monologues presented originally for a radio programme) …….which means if I don’t like the one I’m reading I can always flip on by and start the next one!

  1. The little things are HUGE in my life – which is just as well because I don’t cope very well with the big ones.

We have been enriching the vets (three separate practices) this week. I am very glad (and grateful) that time is nearly at an end. Batty is doing much better and we have a follow up appointment today which will hopefully be the last.

    1. I’m crossing fingers and toes that Batty is well on the way to recovery now EC. He (and his brother) have had such a rough trot in their short lives they are so privileged to have you and your fella as their’parents’

    1. Thanks Kat. The ‘powers that be’ suggest the worst could be over and as farms restock and chicks become laying hens in the spring supplies will increase.

  2. When you redo that little sweater it is going to be a beauty. The knitting looks lovely even if it has to be redone. I think we are all better off if we appreciate the little things in life. It makes a big difference to me.

    1. So true Jane, I’m a fan of the little things in life. The big things are known to not play nice.
I just need a quiet afternoon to gather my thoughts on the guernsey- once I’m back to the starting spot it’ll be easy peasy. Or at least I hope it will😊

  3. Oh Cathy, how annoyed to realise you’ve been doing the back again when you needed to do the front! On another note – your knitting is so neat and beautiful! I like to knit and I love to crochet but abandoned a crochet project ages ago and have not got back to it. I’m a bit like that! Art took over and more recently … I’ve not been doing anything creative except perhaps the blog! BTW – I didn’t know Qld had an egg shortage or that we were gonna be short on strawberries and I live in Brisbane! I must be living under a rock! Thanks for linking up with #WWWhimsy – enjoy the rest of your week! xo

    1. Some news articles just pass us by Min….as hens are being destroyed because of the disease outbreak the egg problem has been national for a couple of months now. The strawberry shortage was only announced the other day…..result of all the recent rain.

    2. Thanks for the compliment on the knitting Min, this wool has been a dream to work with. Shame there’s no more where that came from though

And I just had to wonder where my head was to make a silly mistake like that – now to set to and put it right.

    1. Visiting Scotland will be something you will enjoy Sue… no matter which areas you go to there is so much to see (and learn about).
Five of my 8 GtGrandparents had Scottish ancestry so I’m a little biased😊

  4. I love the pattern you’re knitting Cathy. I used to love knitting, but seem to have forgotten about it over the past few years. I do have an unfinished jumper somewhere, so should find it and see if I can remember the pattern. I’ve noticed there are lots of egg less recipes around at the moment.

    1. I put it (knitting anything) aside for many years then when grandchildren started appearing in Melbourne made a few bits. Charity knitting sort of carried on from there….

  5. I saw seafog for the first time this winter. Of course I took photos too. It’s a strange phenomena the way it hovers over the sea.

I hhave made many egglesscakes cakes. Either I’d run out or I was economising. Still now if a cake calls for 3 eggs I’ll put in 2 and add a tbsp of vinegar for the 3rd. And then we have Lenten cakes, no eggs, no dairy. They are usually a bit crumbly but good tasting.

And nno strawberries 🙁 that’s tough!!

    1. Isn’t sea fog a magical thing to witness. I don’t live near the ocean at home so seeing it is like a winter treat…..much better than snow- although that can be magical as well- for a short while!

  6. The weather…what everyone talks about when it doesn’t behave. Today it’s 21 Aug and we are in short sleeves and it got to 25-27 deg. And will do so for a week. BUT I am not going to take any winter stuff off the bed because we all know why….

As for Tom Lake, it was SLOW, as I listened to Merryl Streep read it and she kept me interested but like a few of Ann Patchett’s books they are USA-centric. Her right of course but some parts of it, other than the covid bits, were not of my interest.

    Take care,

    Denyse #TeamWWWhimsy

    PS sorry about the knitting.

    1. lol I’m thinking winter bedding will stay on our bed at home for a while after we get back. This weekend will ‘dedicated’ to the knitting repair job…unless something else crops up. In which case it’ll be whenever I get round to it
I’m glad to hear someone else was unimpressed with Tom Lake. I definitely felt the odd one out mentioning it to another book group.

    1. Hello Cathy
I’m lapping it up at the moment – it’ll be all change once we’re home. Getting this jumper sorted is my weekend project…..unless something more interesting turns up😊

  7. Your knitting is so pretty…sorry that you need to think part of it. Hopefully you will be back on track again soon. Fortunately we have not had any egg shortages here in Eastern PA…and certainly no strawberry shortages! Hoping those shortages end soon for you.

    1. Planning to sit down with it tomorrow….it’ll be a case of gritting teeth and removing the needle. Then of course having to pick all those stitches up again.
Thanks for popping in and leaving a comment.

  8. you can’t finish the pullover with a ‘boat neck’ to avoid unpicking?

egg shortages aye? What’s happening in the world? We had same about a year ago and although the rationing has ended the prices haven’t gone down again.

  9. Yes – a global outbreak means many countries are suffering and hens being slaughtered here there and everywhere. The latest prediction here is come spring and ‘new’ chicks have developed into layers all should be well. Rationing is still in full swing here but I haven’t noticed too much price gouging.

I thought about changing the neckline but it’s easier to rip it down and then I know what I’m doing instead of faffing about and possibly losing my patience

  10. I agree, Cathy, it is the little things that add up to an interesting life. I haven’t been up to much this week, as I have been sick (for the first time in over a year), but I am feeling almost back to normal today. Even while I wasn’t feeling well, I enjoyed an impressive thunderstorm and another day of sitting in the sun, a good book, and listening to music…just to name a few. Life is good.
