🧶 Going up…..

Winter solstice is in two days time….

After the last couple of weeks we’ve had,…..where as well as all the other things going on that I mentioned earlier…… the day my car was serviced they managed to ‘prang it’……moving it over to the car wash area the driver reversed into something!……extra days while it was being sorted out and resprayed, knowing she had things to do and no loan car available did not make Catherine a happy chappy, which meant the cold gloomy weather we had made everything feel worse……so the prospect of daylight going up (increasing, becoming longer) and eventually temperatures going up sounds good…..to be honest……more than good – bloody marvellous!.

To lighten my mood and give me something else to think about I broke into a bag of yarn I’d put aside for Bowen and began one of the sweaters.
Reasoning – it was going to be ‘winter knitting’…..winter was here and it really wouldn’t matter where the knitting took place. Plus little snacks provided by The Golfer kept me happy as well😊

This wasn’t the most expensive yarn, yes it was on special but not ‘cheap’ by any manner of means…..heavier than it appeared through the sealed bag and has the look and feel of ‘wool’ not the acrylic I assumed it to be. Which is why I went up a size making a 4yr not the 2yr I’d planned.
Mill ends have no descriptions just sold by weight.

* PRODUCT OVERVIEW.
Be challenged and get creative with a surprise bag of yarn! Value Ball Mill Ends Packs are assorted 400 g packs of mixed fibre yarns from factory overruns. Each pack will be full of surprises, you may receive a bag of soft and fluffy novelty chenille yarn, lightweight variegated pastel yarn, versatile beige chunky yarn, or a vibrant neon acrylic DK yarn

You can usually judge by looking and rolling a strand to try and get a feel but really it’s like a lucky dip – never knowing and making the best of what you get. I’ve never gone wrong by buying them but there are times I look at what’s on offer in the bins and wonder ‘what on earth would you make out of that?’

So what I’m making (and have made previously) is described as…..
child’s jumper with yoke patterning on front and back as well as purl fabric ridges above lower bands, at tops of sleeves and at base of neckband.
To me it’s like a guernsey- straight up and down, dropped sleeve, a bit of cabling on front and back with some ridges here and there😊

There’s also been a little reading going on. Nothing heavy – does Julia Quinn ever write heavy?

‘Going Up’ very very soon – to where it’s warm 😎

    1. Thanks YAM. It’s working out really well – I’m enjoying working with something a little heavier than my ‘usual’ 8ply acrylic and it knitting up better than I expected.

    1. I actually was quite cross Andrew and told them so especially when after questioning them discovered it was some young lads fault but an ‘experienced mechanic’. Luckily I was able to reschedule appointments but that really was beside the point.

    1. You’re right about the sizes Joanne. It’s more suited to a larger child even though the 2yr instructions are included. I’m happy with the way it’s knitting up – and that matters to me

  1. I like your knitting, as always. I’m a great fan of your little jumpers.

A bag of surprises. Sounds exciting. I get acrylic yarn and am very happy with it when the parcel arrives for me to open. I wish we had a wool shop though , to touch and fondle

  2. The thing about the bang-up to the car — which is bad enough! — is that it was the finale to so much OTHER stuff. And when it all piles up, well… Sometimes I just need to sorta go to pieces, then start fresh. (Easier said than done, most of the time.)

Glad you dipped in to the mystery bag. And your tea and cookies would be an excellent balm, in my book!

(The numbing, though — that’s usually a ‘move to the front of the line’ symptom. While I’m terrible at following PT, I hope you find some improvement with the exercises.)

    1. Crash was too harsh – prang was just right 😊.
My Dad plus The Golfer (both ex airforce) use/ed it a lot.
Thanks for popping in, I’ll drop by sometime to see what you’re up to.

    1. Melbourne (even if it’s a little bit chilly at the moment) is certainly is a great place to live and Bowen (where we’ll spend the rest of the winter) is definitely a great place. Bowen in Far North Queensland is a delight during the winter – maybe a tad too humid during the other half of the year- but with sun, sand & sea to enjoy what more could you want?

  3. I love the ‘natural’ colour of that yarn. You seem to have picked the right pattern for it. I got a gift voucher recently for long service and have been wondering what (meaningful thing) to spend it on and a light bulb went off a couple of days ago and illuminated the idea that I could get the spinning wheel that I have always wanted – especially now that I am returning downunder and will finally have time to use it. I hope I can produce colour and design like that knitting of yours.
