Maybe it was better not to have known

The Golfer is an exserviceman and with the benefit of the internet and many of the ‘friends’ and ‘service association websites’ has over the past 20 years tracked down many of his ‘ friends and colleagues’ he served with over the years.  None of them live in the same cities or even counties and for some the same countries yet they all now keep in touch with each other by long distance and relive times gone by.  In some circles they call it the ‘when we’ club’ in others it’s called ‘swinging the lamp’ – whatever, they are all now old men (don’t tell them that tho’) and enjoy their memories (real or imaginary) of when they were young and fancy free lol

There was one special person that they had never been able to find – none of what I call the ‘cypriot gang’ (they had all served together in Cyprus ) had come across him or even heard anything about him since they finished their time there back in the early ’60s.  That was until earlier this year.

It had almost become like a challenge for The Golfer and a couple of the others who were really friendly with Terry to discover more traces of his family – starting with his name, which wasn’t his actual first name, he was known by his second name.  Thats what happens when family names are passed down – and ones that are now regarded as old fashioned.

Someone thought he came from (was born in) a certain county, another mentioned a brother called x, another remembered mention of a sister called y and so it went.   Over the years they had followed up leads on the free BMD website and then taking pity on them late last year I offered to look on one of the paid sites I use for the family research.

Couldn’t find him himself so I tried what they thought were the names of his father and mother – something came up under a public tree.   It’s strange contacting an unknown person asking if they were related to a person called so and so who was in the airforce and had a passion for motor bikes.  Not my usual line when searching for lost family members lol  Anyway to cut a long story short it turned out she was the great niece of The Golfer’s (and my) friend.

When I say mine – it’s because I had also lived in Cyprus at that time and did get to know many of The Golfer’s friends – this particular lad came to our engagement and also our wedding and then was godfather to our first born.  When The Golfer was posted we like the others lost touch with Terry.  The airforce is not like the army where a whole battalion moves at the same time – each individual airman is moved as needed so you might serve with someone for a couple of years and then never see each other again.

The news went out to the others and we all waited for her next contact message.

After he finished his time in the airforce like many of us Terry migrated to Australia  – so it was no wonder no one could trace him in England.  In the middle of the 1970s he took a position with a survey team up in the remote areas of the Northern Territory servicing the teams helicopter.  Yes another ‘engine man’ like The Golfer lol

Most of the day he was on his own whilst the team was out surveying for mineral deposits and as it was (and still is) a very remote and lonely area, he got a dog, then a horse for friendship during the day.  When the survey team got back to camp and started to relax he was still on his own doing his job which was any maintenance needed on the helicopter so it was serviceable for the next morning.

Communications in those days would have been a challenge – in fact they still are.  The climate is harsh – right up there at the Top End its either the dry season or the wet and it can be really really wet and they would have been sleeping in tents,  no mod cons, very little contact with his family in Adelaide so its no wonder he felt lonely and became depressed.  So much so that (according to his brother) one day when the team was away he drove back to Kununurra, parked in someones driveway and with the help of a bottle of whiskey and the car’s exhaust said goodbye to this world.

Since learning all this over a week ago life for me (and The Golfer) has been a bit iffey and challenging – I have never felt so much sadness and grief for a long time – I realise what’s past is past and can’t be undone – yet selfishly I am wondering tho, as my title says – maybe it was better for us not to have known.

Smile please……………

Life’s a bit iffey and challenging at the moment so just to lighten my mood here’s a little something I hope will make you smile 🙂

Patrick’s naming service

Patrick’s pregnant sister was in a terrible car accident and went into a deep coma.

After being in the coma for nearly six months, she wakes up and sees that she is no longer pregnant.

Frantically, she asks the doctor about her baby.

The doctor replies, ‘Ma’am, you had twins….a boy and a girl.

The babies are fine, however, they were poorly at birth and had to be baptised immediately, so your brother Patrick came in and named them.

The woman thinks to herself, ‘Oh suffering Jesus, no, not me brother, he’s a f.ecking clueless idiot.

Expecting the worst, she asks the doctor, ‘Well, what’s my daughter’s name?’

Denise‘, says the doctor.

The new mother is somewhat relieved, ‘Wow, that’s a beautiful name, I guess I was wrong about my brother’, she thought….’I really like Denise’.

Then she asks, ‘What’s the boy’s name?’

The doctor replies, ‘Denephew‘!!!

Looks a bit like rain……..

I had to pop down to Boronia this morning and stopped where there is an opening on the side of Liverpool Road to catch this photo of the clouds over the hills.  Mmmmm, I thought to myself maybe ‘they’ve’ got it right for a change – it’s getting quite dark and there might be little bit of rain on its way.

Half an hour later down came a few drops so I stopped on the way home to peer through the mucky windscreen at the dark rain laden clouds over a the Dandenongs.  Of course this time its from a different angle.

‘They’ did get it right because I spent the rest of the day listening to the rain bucketing down outside accompanied by thunder and lightning lol

Then as it grew chillier and I put on more clothes I remembered a sunny day two years before when I took a similar photograph of the same view

How good are your forecasters at getting it right?

I thought I had the answer…..

Years ago when the children were little I’d sometimes look at the house in dismay – I wasn’t the worlds greatest housekeep preferring to ‘play house’ with littlies rather than ‘keep house’.  It wasn’t dirty (I drew the line at dirt) more like untidy.

Trying to teach 5 youngsters how to be responsible for dressing themselves and putting things away usually resulted in more messy cupboards than tidy ones and corners that seem to breed stuff that was put there ‘just for moment’ rather than put away where it belonged.

So as I say I’d stand there some days and think ‘something has to be done here’.  I struck on what I thought was a novel idea of imagining we had company coming in x number of days and the house had to sorted by then.  Not perfect but sorted to a reasonable standard – meaning I could open cupboards without things falling out and have nothing lurking in corners.

It worked – I’d get them all to help as far as possible, not actually throwing things out even if I did hide a few now and again and by doing this it also gave me a chance to look at what was there and assess the contents.  I used to wonder if toys were like wire coat hangers – I was sure they used the darkness of night to breed lol

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when interstate friends mentioned they were coming over the Melbourne in October – jokingly (but meaning it) Viv said they were coming to a conference and needed a place to stay.  Oh dear, I said we won’t be here on those dates – could we stay in your house even if you aren’t there, she said.  We can use the train to go into town each day.  Of course says I!  Our little girl will have the key and she’s just round the corner.

Then a little lightbulb lit up in my head.  This will give me a chance to sort out all those places I keep saying I’m going to sort – recently I have been having a good hard look around the house muttering yes or no to lots of things and the ‘no’s’ have been off down the op shop quick smart before I could change my mind but this would give me the chance to really get things in order.

I could do it slowly – we leave in September and thats a fair way off.  Take a week or more to really strip each room, empty cupboards and drawers, air the beds, wash spare blankets and sheets as well as linens.  Closer to the time give the kitchen and bathroom a really deep clean etc etc.  Talk about motivation, I had a lean clean tidy uncluttered house visible in my mind already.   Not only would I be able to help Viv and D but I’d have the benefit of all this hard work when I got home 🙂

Then this weekend just gone she rang and said – ‘Hope you don’t mind, we’ve decided to book an apartment in the city, it will be much closer to the venue’.  Well once I was off the phone I felt quite let down, which was stupid because I wasn’t even going to see them when they were here – and felt as though I’d had the rug pulled out from under me.  All that enthusiasm has gone not sure where but it certainly has left my house.

I really thought I had the answer………..
Maybe to get my plan to work I might have to go back a few years
and invent an imaginary visitor lol

It’s like riding a bike…….

Just like riding a bike – some things are never forgotten

February 1954 – 60 years ago
The Golfer was finally old enough to join the airforce in a scheme that took young men, educated and trained them in a relevant trade ready for men’s service in the RAF.

Laugh time………..

As you can see my philosophy on life pops up everywhere
Live – Laugh – Love

Life is a problem for many here in Victoria and in other places at the moment
so maybe it’s time for a laugh

This one is for our friends elsewhere – where it is cold and not hot!

Wife texts husband on a cold winter’s morning:

“Windows frozen.”

Husband texts back:

“pour some luke warm water over it.”

Wife texts back:

“computer completely buggered now!

And this one if for all of us

Today’s Short Reading from the Bible…

From Genesis: “And God promised men that good and obedient wives would be found in all corners of the earth.”

Then He made the earth round…and He laughed and laughed and laughed!

Our World Tuesday – Chinese Lunar Year

Our WorldEnjoying the festival of the Chinese New Year has always been a favourite of ours.
This year we celebrated with friends on Friday January 31 in a restaurant that was having a Lion Dance troupe come in and entertain us.

I managed to take some photos but with so many people and tables and the Lion on the go all the time it wasn’t as easy as I thought it would be
Anyway enjoy!

1 Preparing to come in

The lion was accompanied by musicians beating a huge drum, cymbals, and gongs and an additional figure, a Laughing Buddha with a facial mask. This character tempts the lion with a fan or a giant ball.

During the Chinese New Year, it is a tradition for the lion to go from business to business to perform. The business owners “feed” the lion with oranges, a head of lettuce or bok choy which includes a red envelope filled with money. This brings prosperity to the business for the upcoming year.
