I call them..‘me do its’

It’s Wednesday again – that middle of the week day.
Some days have been and gone – some have yet to arrive
I don’t know why but this year seems to be galloping along at quite a pace, this is the last Wednesday in March…..one month of autumn gone already – and to make matters worse the clocks go back this weekend 🙁🙁😕…..

A while ago in amongst their requests the charity was asking for children’s woolies.
Jumpers/Sweaters were included – unlike 2019 when they were frowned on
When a friend sent me the message she had reworded it this way
2/3yr olds need functional – added colour optional.

Functional to me means serves its purpose
works well with no stress
So I dug around in ‘the pile’ and came up with an old Totem booklet

And what could be less stressful (and oh so quick & easy to knit) than these little *left hand blue* ones that I call ‘ me do its’
Easy to put on, no recognised front or back, no problem with getting it right.
No stress on child trying to be independent…..or supervising adult😊

Usual run of the mill

These four are now sitting in the charity box ready for delivery soon. I had fun doing the little cars, one row on the chest and the other near the hem added a bit of interest…..not as much as the frequent tangled threads situation. Three different colours plus the main in use on every row was interesting. I really enjoy intarsia….but prefer fair isle where I have no problem whatsoever.

A little bit different
Lots of fun

(I was working on the royal blue/yellow one during that ‘interesting’ craft morning)

My reading has come to a standstill
As much as I wanted I just couldn’t get into A Sand Archive……the March selection at what I call my ‘real book club’.
It’s all well and good the library encouraging readers to open their minds to different authors and supplying the books but sometimes those choices sound ‘good/interesting’, start off great then turn out to be strange – and very disappointing
So we’ll say no more about this month’s offering!

    1. Oh yes Maggie I thought about turning the warmth on today when a very wet cold front came through. Nasty shock to the system that was😊

      1. I’m way better over the break in shock – but the dude who had the actual break in – “isn’t” – he was going off to work this morning (after 6am) and he noted that the empty house el.gate was beeping badly. He messaged me around 7ish with apologies “could I look into it”. I did, and I had to text Z for a contact number. I called that number and got a voice mail….

In meantime the dude was so jumpy that he left his curtains closed and his lights on – before he went to work. Plus his landlord “didn’t do what he said and put in a door, with a lock…but not a deadlock” – according to tenancy rules, the “door must be able to locked” … so a deadlock isn’t necessary!

Late arvo, he comes home and there is a vehicle at the empty house, the el.gate is still bleeping but said driver finally comes to the gate and tells me in extemely broken English that it’s the inside fire alarm! Nothing to do with the “gate” –

I’ve decided that I’m not going down that “pathway” again… I don’t require that kind of stress. Empty houses are a “thing here in Auckland, they are called ghost houses…usually the owner is out of the country, just marking time or something”

  1. That looks like the perfect pattern to knit while reading (except for the intarsia – not my idea of fun – i prefer Fair Isle which i work with colours on both hands to keep them from tangling; a tiny benefit of being able to knit both english and continental methods). Lovely me do its. As ever your output is amazing.

    1. Yes as Pop Larkin would say – Perfick! Easy Peasy – straight forward – Adaptable – one of those set and forget patterns. As far as ‘output’ is concerned you have to remember I’m not having to take part in the 9-5 lark so can pick up the needles any spare moment I have. It’ll slow down sometime

  2. So smart – I’ve never thought about kids wanting to dress themselves! My pals’ kids will be getting to that age next year so I’ll remember it for their birthday gifts.

  3. Those are gorgeous little kids jumpers Cathy! I remember my kids wanting to be independent “do it myself”!

    1. Oh those were the days Min….days we thought we’d never be sane at the end of. How could someone so small have such definite ideas on what they wanted to do😊

    1. Seemingly ‘Independent Annie’ was something I was called for a couple of my much younger days. I just hope I can help some children (and carers) during those days

  4. Well I think your me do it jumpers are just perfect. Never mind the yarn snobs. Sure to be loved. Our clocks went forward on Sunday, still getting used to it. And it’s raining!

    1. Apart from the fact it will be ‘ringing in’ the colder weather this time change doesn’t affect me as much as the spring one….we get an extra hour in bed. Still have to sort out some clocks though.

    1. I know it’s not possible Vera but sometimes I wish I could see the anonymous clients who choose the woolies. My ‘joy’ is in the giving

    1. The charity often publishes ‘thank you notes’ from clients who have received woolies. Mum always told me to use the skills I had to the best of my ability- so that’s what I aim for in this venture.

  5. What sweet little sweaters. I have to smile at the “functionality” request. I always try to knit mittens with no left or right hand. Sweaters that can go on either way is a brilliant idea. All book are not right for all readers. We just set our clocks ahead an hour a few weeks ago. I enjoy reading about your part of the world.

    1. My friend always put a ‘fun’ twist to the requests that come from the head office. Like you’ve mentioned it’s better all round if difficulties are seen ahead rather than sorted out when they crop up. They are easy items to knit and if I can have some fun at the same time it’s win win all round.

  6. Your posts are inspiring me to knit, Cathy. I remember the pattern books, Mum used to use. She would layby the wool and collect some balls each week when she could afford them. I remember making myself a Fair Isle patterned jumper in Grade 5 and was very proud of myself. x

    1. Psst want a pattern book? I’ve got loads – I haven’t bought any for years and yet they seem to multiply😊. Try any op shop and there’ll be loads of vintage ones there because as the older knitters give up they donate their ‘pile’ and unfortunately they aren’t quite the styles younger knitters want to make.
Lay-by is still available for those who need it – Lincraft and Spotlight offer it ( not sure about local yarn shops). I’m hoping you will share what you make when the time arrives.

  7. Oh gosh how I remember those words…and how I loved seeing your beautiful knits. My kids and grandkids did get some knits over the years, especially in the baby stage (from my mum or auntie, I had ONE attempt…don’t ask) but each eventually would refuse to wear ‘too hot/scratchy’ …sigh. As always, I am grateful that you shared your post for Wednesday’s Words and Pics. See you again next week, when no more daylight saving in Australia for 6 months, means Eastern States will be all on same time! Denyse.
