Crochet like you’ve never seen before….

State borders being closed in 2021 during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic meant we had to extend our ‘winter break’ in Far North Queensland.
I’ve mentioned previously we spent some of that extra time visiting Mackay, learning about a small city 950km north of Brisbane but just a couple of hours (190km) south of Bowen.

Of all the many crafts I’ve tried to learn over the years
there’s one I’ve never been able to master
Crochet!
But I do recognise and appreciate skill when I see I see it
These are just a few items from another exhibition I/we went to at Artspace Mackay.
Which I’m sure will appeal to many of you.
(I’m sorry but I can’t locate the description plates that tell what each exhibit is)
However the subject was Lichen -that ‘strange stuff’ that grows on things

  1. Unbelievable, or would be if I hadn’t read something a while ago about a woman who teaches high level physics using crochet to represent mathematical forms that we can’t otherwise do in our limited 3 dimensional imaginations. These ones are easier to understand and beautiful. I so love lichens.

    1. So glad you enjoyed it F (Tigger would have had fun trying to swat the hanging exhibits). I’m amazed at the ingenuity of some artists – they are so dedicated to their craft.

  2. Oh my goodness. Those are very interesting but beautiful pieces. I have never mastered crochet either. I always wonder if that is because I learned to knit at a young age. One crochet hook feels awkward to me.

    1. My mother never crocheted so I think that’s the reason I didn’t learn as a child- by the time I became interested I couldn’t master the yarn in the left hand bit. I’m ok with the one needle part, just find I can’t get that other important part of the equation!

  3. So clever. My hands just couldn’t make those little stitches anymore.
I’ll stick to the mosaic crochet for now. I’m a bit addicted

  4. Heavens to Betsy that’s wonderful crochet. I have hardly gone beyond granny squares. My own grandmother, who taught me, did beautiful doillies, some of which Im lucky to still have.

    1. You’ve done better than me Linda….as I mentioned it’s one craft I just cannot master. So many people have tried to teach me but my left hand just doesn’t want to cooperate

    1. Yam, You’re right in that others have made marvellous creations- I just thought the subject of these was slightly different. I’m glad you enjoyed it though

  5. What wonderful work. My mother taught me to crochet but I haven’t crocheted anything for years.
The physics teacher has found an inspired way to teach difficult concepts. Teachers like that are born, not made.

    1. Hello there, thanks for dropping in and for your comment. There are some marvellous displays to see out there….perhaps seeing these might give you the reason to start making something again
