Out of his comfort zone

Towards the end of last year, because of ‘you know what’, there were still difficulties obtaining interstate border passes which meant we stayed longer in Queensland, enjoying some other towns along the way. In this post last November I mentioned an exhibition we went to in Mackay…..(well The Golfer was persuaded to come along – or choose the option of sitting in the car while I sauntered round for an unknown length of time). I’ll be the first to admit it wasn’t his cup of tea but he did come in and have a look around.

Aircraft museums – Art galleries = give and take. Happy wife – Happy life 😊

This is a little bit more of what we saw – just a few things that took my fancy.
The wall plates explain the displayed works – I’ve added some bio info about the indigenous artists that you might be interested in – to see more detail don’t forget to Click/ tap or finger slide to enlarge.
(Please note there are photos of deceased artists on some of these links.)

Artspace Mackay have a fabulous page on their website where you can do 3D virtual tours of past exhibitions – the one we saw ran from 30 July – 17 October 2021.

I forgot to snap the info on this work below but through the marvel of the 3D feature I was able to find it 😊

  1. Just want to say thank you for your friendship — I had an acute exacerbation of my congestive heart failure this past week and came home from the hospital with Hospice care. I’m going to be o.k. but won’t have much energy or time to spend on the computer.

Do take care and thanks for all your photos. They’re greatly appreciated. Carol

    1. I saw your last post Carol but haven’t had time to visit. Let’s hope it all comes right with the extra care you’ll be able to get

    1. They were the two artists I kept coming back to- seeing something different each time. The three works on the one wall took up an enormous amount of space

  2. How very interesting, Cathy…an enjoyable visit, indeed!

I hope you were got to go up to Eungella while you were in the Mackay area. I loved visiting Eungella. It is there, in one of the creeks, I saw my first ever platypus in the wild. 🙂

    1. We drove down to the Pioneer Valley a few years ago Lee. Through Marian, then on to Finch Hayton and up to Eungella. Spectacular views along the way and sadly no world platypus to be seen……

  3. It’s good to go out of your comfort zone occasionally. The art is lovely
I’m sure the golfer would of appreciated something in there.

  4. Bob would have stayed in the car, or more likely at home. I would love to see this and enjoyed your photos. they are all fantastic, I think my favorite is the first one but hard to choose

    1. We were staying in a cabin in town – it was a very hot day so The Golfer chose air conditioned comfort over anything else.
Ist Nation art (of any country) is always interesting Sandra – yes different to European styles – but if you look at it with an open mind there’s always something to learn from it

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it EC – it was a change from the ‘standard paintings’ found in art galleries. Art yes but in a different form

    1. lol Sue, sometimes things sit on the back boiler until the time is right – so glad you enjoyed it. There’s something a little bit different about Fiona Omeenyo’s work isn’t there.

    1. Sometimes it takes a while for me to put ‘different’ things on the blog and I’m always pleased if someone shares the pleasure I felt when I saw them live. There’s certainly a lot of ‘depth’ to each of the pieces…..and aT times our ‘western minds’ take a while to understand the thinking behind them.

  5. Art is an individual love, I think. I know I see so much in art as a highly visual person than my husband might. I loved seeing these through your eyes. I am looking forward to become more engage with art and viewing when there are a “few” more choices back in Sydney. I have the utmost respect for the stories being told via the paintings by the first people’s of Australia. Great to see you join in for Wednesday’s Words and Pics. Next week it will be the 10th one! I am enjoying our connections via blogging each week and hope you are too. Denyse.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed it Denyse…it’s a little like varying music tastes. Hard rock v country or soft ballads v rap. There’s something for everybody out there.
Your return to the ‘big city’ will definitely bring many benefits to you

  6. Oh wow Cathy it looks great. I went to a First Nations’ gallery in the West Kimberley earlier this year and it was amazing. I particularly love those blue sculptures!
