Allo..Allo..Allo

What do we have here – the first day of June – you know what that means
It’s the day that is deemed to be the first day of Winter here in Australia.

Our seasons change the first of the month not the 21st like in the Northern Hemisphere

Officially our Summer starts on January 1st – Autumn on March 1st

Winter on June1st and Spring on September 1st

I grizzle and groan at this time of the year – often the weather is cold, wet and miserable. We all know ‘cold’ is relative to where you live  – compared to other places our cold here in Melbourne is not really cold (average winter lows of about 4c which is about 39f)  – I can’t remember the last time we had a real frost – so when I complain, its not really about the weather, its more about the fact that I have to put more clothes on☹️

What do you mean – these are not winter shoes??

There is one thing I do know about this time of the year – as sure as fate – a particular brand of chocolate comes on sale..it’s winter, it’s cold, there’s no way it’s going to melt😊😊

So all I have to say (remind myself more like) is……..

I’ll have accepted it by tomorrow morning – which hopefully is warmer than yesterday

Yesterday afternoon – about 4.30pm Tuesday 31 May

ps – and if you are under the impression that ’it doesn’t get cold in Sydney’ pop over to Kylie’s blog eclectica where she will let you in on the secret that – it just ain’t so……it does get cold cold in Sydney

  1. It’s just noon on May 31, here in central California, on the other side of the world. Like you are with June 1 being the first day of winter, here it will be the first day of summer, in my book. June, July, August–summer.

Now, we’ve already had a few days over 100 degrees, and today I bought the first cantaloupe, albeit from El Centro, on the far southern boundary of the state with Mexico where the days have been very hot so the melons are growing big and sweet. It will be another month before the San Joaquin Valley melons will come on market.

But, the corn arrived yesterday at Fresno State University. You would have thought God had recreated the world. People here love the university’s corn and line up early on the first day to buy it. Not me. I may get some later. It’s good corn, but not the stuff you wait in line for. Ah, summer.

    1. It’s the early cherries that people crave here. There are auctions for the first deliveries to fruit markets just before Christmas. lol for many years corn was grown mainly for cattle feed, it’s mainstream in the supermarkets but like you I’m not sure I’d be desperate for the first batches on sale

  2. I am ignoring your six day forecast. We are soon to head to Sydney for some warmer weather among other reasons so I am not clicking on the link to Kylie either.

    1. Enjoy your trip Andrew – it’ll probably be warmer up there with cooler nights. Winter will be waiting here at home for you to return!

    1. I know you’ll enjoy the lower temps EC – there were light falls up the road from here, I won’t be investigating though 😊

Oh, I know it gets cold in Sydney… I have even witnessed the once in a decade snow event there! Mind you, that was back in the 1990s. Still, up in the hill area where I lived, frosts were not unknown for a couple of weeks mid-winter! Thank goodness for space heaters is all I can say. YAM xx

    1. Oh yes Yam heating in all forms is a necessity and of course As you’ll remember cooling as well. How early settlers coped is a mystery to me, must have been more stoic than us these days

    1. I didn’t know that Cathy you learn something every day. Emphasis always used to be on the 21st. Today turned out to be wet and cold (again) a fraction warmer than yesterday but not by much… My early winter treat are mandarins – small sweet easy to peel citrus fruit, easier to eat than an orange

  5. while you are putting on more clothing we are stripping down to as little as possible, with heat in the mid 90’s and watching the hurricane sitting in the gulf. I always know what weather is in your country because you are the opposite of Us. what we need is a home in several countries and a private jet to move where the sunshine and temps are what we want. just dreaming.

  6. Ist day of winter in New Zealand. As one has to say, we acclimate to our weather and I will be cold. Heatpump has been on a lot leading up to the season, along with top up with a small heater as the pump doesn’t serve all the house.

Right now it’s been mixed weather…yesterday a t-shirt kind if day but with some rain. Today I’ve no idea but ot looks gloomy outside…
