Musical Monday….

It’s surprising how different the words to a song – the tune – the melody – can sound when sung by various arists.

Take this one  ~ Accentuate the Positive ……

Music by Harry Arlen – Lyrics by Johnny Mercer

This is the original sung by Johnny Mercer

Crooners like Bing Crosby and Perry Como recorded it

Frank Sinatra recorded a version in concert (also a little chat with Johnny Mercer)

And Ella Fitzgerald gave it a go in 1960

While in 1988 Willy Nelson gave it a distinct country flavour

If you have time, listen and tell me what you think – which do you prefer?

These Mondays come by quite quickly don’t they…..I know I’ve been back home less than two weeks and shouldn’t make mention of it….in fact knowing what she went through during the war my mother would have a fit if she heard me carrying on…..but already, similar to this time last year, the ’controlled environment’ we’re living in here in Victoria is beginning to ’get to me’. I could hear that same frustration in Andrew’s voice when he commented the other day (“get busy in your garden There’s eff all else to do”) We must go oh so carefully now and if everyone plays their part (wouldn’t that be a lovely thing) it’s not going to last too much longer but in the meantime I’m going to have to take notice of the song and

accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative’ .

Last Saturday morning was warm enough to sit outside in a T-shirt and bright enough when I was ’pottering’ to need my sunglasses. There was a brand new (2021) library book to read (The Echo Chamber – John Boyne) a little cardigan to knit some love into and time to have a quick cup of coffee with The Golfer. Here’s to many more 😊😎

Love to you all ❤️

  1. Your case numbers are so high at the moment, you could be locked down for a little while. It does pass, though and before you know it, it will be Christmas.

    1. We’ll get there Kylie – we did it last year as well as earlier this year and we’ll do it again. Slow like the tortoise wins the race, no matter what unfair set backs are put in our way.

  2. These were all fun versions Cathy but I think I liked Bing’s, Perry’s and Willie’s versions the best, a bit more something in them for me. I hope things ease for you soon but a good message for today! #lifethisweek

    1. Thanks for listening Debbie – the smooth versions just flow don’t they, the country one has a bit of life to it. Ella put her own jazz style to it and Johnny Mercer sang in his own ‘Big Band’ 1940s style, putting meaning to the song he wrote to lift spirits during WW2.

  3. Was Accentuate the Positive used in the tv series Pennies from Heaven? That was a really good recording. I’ll listen to these tomorrow on my tablet.

  4. Those old crooners were so smooth. I do like Perry Como but they’re all good. I’d actually never heard this song before. Very topical.
You’re keeping busy. That’s all you can do. Don’t start baking!!

    1. No, bakings not on the agenda Linda but I’m intrigued as to why you’re advising me not to start. Do you know something about my cooking skills that I don’t 😊

  5. Welcome back
I bet you miss the lovely weather and being able to go out and about
We can’t do much in the garden as our ground is very very wet. As soon as it looks like we might be able to go out it rains again
It’s been so long since I’ve been anywhere other than the supermarket, doctors or the botanic gardens, just recently I don’t know if I remember how to get anywhere else

    1. It’s the relaxed way of life I’m missing more than anything Angela, although I’ve felt the cold more than other years. Yes there’s a definite feeling of having my wings clipped that I don’t like – good things are coming, we’ll just have to wait a little longer.

  6. I have to pick Johnny Mercer first because he wrote the lyrics and had intentions for this song. I did love Willie and Ella as next. Then Perry, Frank and Bing were all similar. Thanks so much for posting these. It was great listening.

    1. Thanks for listening Annie and giving me your thoughts. I enjoyed them all – the smooth versions, the country version, the jazz one but as you mentioned the original one because….being written when it was, there was meaning behind it. Relevant then during WW2 and relevant now during this world wide pandemic..

  7. Oh what a feeling…not…to be back in such a lockdown situation. I read of today’s figures of over 2000 cases and “don’t get it” at all. I sense there has been a kind of “don’t care” by some who have ignored lock down messages and don’t start me on the anti-vaxxers……

Some good news from me. After 110 days I just had my first sit at a fave cafe for coffee..what bliss. It was outside. Spring sunshine and had to show both my 2x vacc certificate and sign in but I didn’t care. Husband got a LONG awaited haircut. I still have 12 days to go.

Thank you for linking up for #LifeThisWeek. Your post is a welcomed contribution to the community. Next week, the optional prompt is Self Care Stories. Instead, for me, I am doing a Wrap Part One of Women of Courage stories. I hope to see you next week too. Denyse.

    1. I suspect there are a lot of reasons for the rise in case numbers Denyse…….we ‘lay people’ can only guess – will never know. Scaremongering- lack of vaccines – vaccine hesitancy/lack of uptake – non qualification…..are possibly just a few. Enjoy your ‘freedom’

  8. I choose Perry Como. Listening to him brought back very fond memories of listening to him as a kid. My father loved him and we kids loved him because of that. Ella’s voice was wasted on the song, I think. Willie Nelson should have stuck to country!
