No wonder I couldn’t find it…

Or possibly – The reason I’ve never been able to find it

A long time ago I read a book by Joanne Harris called Chocolat.  Thoroughly enjoyed it and noticed (on Goodreads) a few years later the author had written a sequel.  Nope not in my library but I could always live in hope of finding it in a second hand bookshop or an op shop.

In the meantime I’ve read and enjoyed more of her books but could not get my hands on the Chocolat sequel I’d been hunting for.  This is what I’ve been looking for  –  The Girl with No Shadow.

Shaky Internet yesterday (thank you NBN linesmen) so I popped down to the library to use theirs – had a browse along the shelves and found this – The Lollipop Shoes by Joanne Harris which was put on the pile that came home with me.

What I’ve added is the Goodreads  ‘book blurb’ for both books  – notice anything familiar?  It would appear the same book was published under two different titles.  The first one (the one I’ve been hunting for) was the title in the US – the second one was the title in the rest of the world.  It would have been a real fluke if I had found it here in Australia!

Anyway I’m pleased I found the book I’ve been looking for all this time……even if it was by chance  – let’s just hope it lives up to its reviews and I enjoy it.😊

    1. I’ve been made aware of different titles – but after I’ve read the book. Never before as in this case. But then I’ve never actually been ‘searching’ for a certain title before

    1. It’s a mystery to me also. These are not recent publications though. Chocolat was first released in 1999 and The girl with no shadow/The lollipop shoes published in 2007.
      Alls good now, I can settle down and read the 2nd book……and then go look for the 3rd and 4th – yes a little bit of investigation has made me aware it’s turned into a series of four books 😊

  4. It has also often been a wonder to me why a book could not simply be called the same nabe all over the anglophone world. I too have more books in duplicate where the title and a few words here and there are different – seems they get “translated” into American as well as given a new title 😉

    1. Hello Charlotte I’ve heard of slight alterations to text for a different market but (unlike other bloggers) this is the first time I’ve noticed a different title. If I’d known about that I could have had access to the book much sooner – knowing what you’re looking for is half the battle- knowing it was sitting on my library shelves would have been a victory for me.

    1. I wonder why publishers do that Helen. Joanne Harris herself mentioned (on Goodreads) the publishers changed the title for the US market, not herself. Looking at the original title (The Lollipop Shoes) there doesn’t seem to be anything that would offend. (You know what Americans are like 😊)

      1. Sorry, couldn’t resist it! If the author was unaware it must have been the publisher’s decision. It wouldn’t be the first time that the same thing was sold by different names in different countries.

    1. No need to worry any more Emiel, the book I found at the library is the same as the one I’ve been hunting for only with a different title.
      But thanks for that bit of info, unfortunately I’m a bit of a ‘skinflint’ and at this stage of my life I’m a library freak. If I can’t find it there (for free) or in an op shop/charity shop for $1 I’ll do without 😊

    1. ‘The girl with no shadow’ does seem to be a strange title doesn’t it Andrew. Maybe after I’ve read it the reason will become clear why that was chosen instead of the original.

  9. I’ve never read the book but I loved the movie with Johnny Depp and Juliette Binoche and others. Our library can get books that aren’t in the collection from an interlibrary loan program, so perhaps I will be able to find it

    1. I read the original Chocolat many years ago Leilani – it was published in 1999 – but did not see the film. I’m not a fan of film adaptations so won’t go looking. The story of the young woman and the village priest was a good read so I’m hoping the 2nd book about her later life is as good.

    1. Oh boy. Wikipedia is very informative here. It tells of the first book, the sequel, giving both names, and even of a third book rounding the series off. Again with nakes in English and American.
