Animal Vegetable Mineral

Years ago back in the 1950s (when I was very very young 😊) there was a show on BBC tv called ‘Animal Vegetable Mineral’ where experts would give one of those names to various articles presented to them.  Most of it went over my head but I do remember they didnt always agree on the classification.

In a mildly similar way Surprised Annoyed Disappointed have been on my lips this week and I can’t seem to agree with myself on which one to use in which situation.

Our Sandwich Maker went on the blink, well it was more a case of the teflon coating wearing off and things sticking to the cross beam that cuts the bread.  Because there  are so many things out in our garage that have been upgraded one of us said ‘if we get another one we won’t need this one and even though it still works it’s going in the bin’ (Not me!)  Down at the Good G’s place one of us made the decision to buy a model that didn’t cut but just marked the toasted sandwich so we could leave it as a whole slice or cut in half as we wanted (Not me!)  Discovering that no matter how much butter is put on the outside of the bread it comes out dry, over cooked and ‘flattened’ with an undercooked filling did not go well with one of us ( that’d be me) Consequently  it looks like we need to experiment’ with cooking time!

* Surprised Annoyed Or Disappointed – doesn’t matter which one I choose I’m still mourning the loss of my old one that gave me nice plump toasted sandwiches cut in two!

A few years ago I discovered a ‘new to me’ author Tracy Chevalier and wrote about this find in 2013 , since then I’ve been reading and enjoying all her books and eagerly looking forward to each new release.  I knew there was another being released some time this year so when my ordered copy arrived at the library the other day I was down there like a shot.  Note to self – keep in mind all those little snippets you read about authors.

I vaguely remembered something I read a while ago about modern authors being involved in a project where Jane Austen’s books were being ‘rewritten‘ – and it seems something similar is in progress at the moment using Shakespeare’s works.  Tracy Chevalier’s latest release is her take on Othello – a thin book of only 188 pages about a play I didn’t study at school or have any real knowledge about the storyline.

* Surprised Annoyed or Disappointed –  makes no difference because I’ll still read the book even though I would have loved it to be a ‘real’ make believe novel.

Do you remember Doug 2, the big teddy I was/I am making for the Gt Grandson – well I mentioned it to his mum when they were here and how I hoped he’d love it.  I knew all about her recent problems but didn’t expect her reply.  ‘Grandma, he’s not really into soft toys and I don’t have anywhere to put it.  Might be better to give it on his second birthday’  I just smiled and said OK.

* Surprised Annoyed or Disappointed – no matter what, Doug will be made.  Perhaps a little more leisurely because there’ll be more time to do so; more time to think about the little lad who will receive it.  Much more love put into it 😊😊

Well, it’s Monday, can’t sit around musing all morning.  Bed to be made, dishes to be done, washing put on  Oh heck I lie, I’m going to have a lazy day reading a new book with possibly a nice cheese and ham toasted sandwich for lunch and maybe do a bit more sewing on Doug this afternoon.  His head needs fixing so he can think more easily 😊😊

How’s ‘your‘ Monday going?

Are you reflecting on anything that happened recently?

  1. It is disappointing when you go to all the trouble to make something and it’s not wanted
I got rid of the toasted sandwich maker years ago and never replaced it
Now I just make them in a fry pan so much easier to clean
I’ve not read any books lately. Just haven’t had the time! Might have to get orthello on audio and listen while I work on my crochet

    1. I’m sure the hurt I felt wasn’t intended Angela – I’ll just plod on with Doug instead of trying to get him finished by October.

    1. Thanks Marie. I was taken aback by the Teddy comment, then thinking about it later I didn’t know whether I felt surprised annoyed or disappointed. One thing led to another as mind was working in overtime 😊

  2. I am about to go out into the garden. Which ALWAYS needs work. So does the house, but one I enjoy and one I don’t.
    Enjoy your book.
I am sad that Doug won’t be going to his intended destination in the short term, but glad that you are going to continue to pour love into him.

  3. Hi Cathy. Great to have found your blog.
We have a big cast iron toasty maker which belonged to my parents. Makes two toasties. It goes onto the hot plate on the stove top, makes perfect toasties . Must be an antique, made to last forever.

    1. I think we’ve got lazy over the years Linda. We used to do them in the electric frypan but it was easier to put them in the maker close the lid and walk away. First world problems eh!!

  4. My daughter used to speak for her kids also. Believe me make sure he gets Doug. I bet he will love him head and all. Appliances are not made to last anymore and when they make perfect sandwiches it is hard to let go. Sign of our age!

    1. Doug ‘will’ arrive Germaine – just a little later than I envisaged. I’m also finding white goods don’t last as long these days.

  5. Oh the sandwich maker woes. I get those too on some Sundays.
My Monday was a happy one. We came back last night from a long road trip and I am happy to be home. So far, so good 🙂
Hope you have a good week ahead.

  6. Years ago, I had one of those sandwich makers, it sat in the cupboard for the longest. I haven’t seen it since we moved 12 years ago. I find my fry pan is easier to clean.
I imagine you felt like she stuck a pin in your balloon. Sorry about that. 😦

    1. Yes they’ve been around in one form or another for a good few years now Sharon. I’m lazy in that I like to clip the lid and walk away rather than standing there having to turn it over and watch to make sure it doesn’t burn. That’s me – if there an easier way to do it I’ll take it 😊

  7. 1) Sandwich maker— better than I– Got one for a wedding gift. Used it, maybe once. Been married almost 14 years.
    2) Book– At least you probably have future works to look forward to… I keep falling in love with authors who have been dead since 1982.
    3) Teddy- Unheard of. There’s always room for a teddy bear. I have 2 rag dolls who need desperate rehab (sewing not alcohol) that I will never part with.

    1. Yes Lori, theres always room for a teddy – this one’s a Big Ted and I can understand the mum’s indifference due to the family circumstances at the moment. Bentley is only 6 moths so maybe he’ll be into them by the time he’s 2 😊

  8. I’ve never even had a sandwich made by a sandwich maker. What I do if I want a hot sandwich is wrap a sandwich in foil and put it in the toaster oven.

I too like Tracy Chevalier. If you like her, you might also like Susan Kay.

  9. Wonderful thoughts indeed, had a sandwich maker once, now just stuck with a good old toaster. That author seems interesting and I may just check out her works. Warm greetings to you.

  10. I believe on Monday, I fiddled with art projects – and again yesterday Tuesday, finishing up with measuring some works that I wanted to go frame shopping today – but after a grey/white sky started, down came sodding rain. So frame shopping off…

I used to have the use of a toaster – then that flatmate left, took his toaster with him – I used the sandwich maker toaster which I still have. Then earlier this year, I was given a toaster – a big one, does 4 pieces if I need…

I’ve got 2 soft toys. Panda is just 60 years old, and Napier is about ?20 years old. Napier very small so he sits against Panda – they are both beside me on the bed…you’ve never too old to rebel against Adulitis and the sooner you start, the better it is…

  11. I love this post. There are so many moments that fall into two or more categories. Where I don’t know whether to feel touched that someone cares or annoyed that they’re using up my time or upset that plans changed, etc.
