Pick me, pick me first ……

It’s Monday morning, there’s another pile of books on a table and you’d think I had nothing of importance to do because I’m sitting here, cup of coffee in hand, deep in thought, musing over which I should begin to read first 🙂

I’ve mentioned a couple of times how I’m trying to work my way alphabetically through titles and authors.  So far so good – after a look around for suggestions I drafted a couple of lists of sorts on Goodreads which worked well for a while until I got sidetracked by thinking about state based books.  You know, read a couple from each Australian state and territory over the 12 months and how about have them written by Australian authors.  So another look around the net for inspiration and another list was born. 🙂 🙂

Of course there is a catch to all this – I don’t buy books these days so they have to be available at the library or happen to come into my hands some other way for Free!

Even with all that I’d probably have been finished if we hadn’t been away all of April – on a cruise ship.  I had lots on my iPad- none of which were on my lists :(. There was also what the cruise line calls a paperback exchange but which I call a drop and swap cupboard, You read the book/s you brought along but don’t want to take home with you, You drop it off for someone else to read, You swap it for another book in the cupboard. And you leave that behind as well.  I’ll admit to making some adjustments to my lists when I got home- swapped some authors names and titles to fit.  Not cheating – i did actually read the books, just not the ones I’d had in mind at the beginning of the year 🙂

So how am I doing with this little challenge I’ve set myself?

Well, if I stick to my lists I have 4 titles and 9 authors whose books I have planned to read – oh and 6 state based ones as well. Of those 19 left to read 4 are on the table in front of me and my big decision of the day is :-

Which one do I pick first?

  1. I do miss reading, but my mind is tending to wander and inside of reading a page, I forget what is on the paper.
    Enjoy whatever you choose!

  2. I order from my local library service as well…but often my orders will in similar and arrive all at the same time – have no idea why I manage that. So this week I picked up 5 books (not novels) and 3 of them on similar subject…I’ve had to decide which one to browse at first and chose the one that said “for baby boomers know-how” – and yes I know a bit more about a certain technology – I’ll get to the other 2 soon…

    1. I’ve had that happen as well Cathy. When we order we’re at the mercy of the other libraries and their staff. Feast or Famine – nothing arrives singly. 😊

  3. How do you keep your lists? I’ve been trying to find a good way to record the books I’ve read and others I want to read. I never have my paper lists when I want them.

    1. Sue I wrote a big long reply and then lost it 🙂 however if you read this post from Dar at An Exacting Life it’s a fabulous description of the system I use. Much better than I could ever come up with!

      Why You Need Goodreads

I access Goodreads at home or at the library (free wifi) also have spreadsheet lists on my ipad and have even been known to have friends recommendations in notes on my phone lol.

      Hope this helps. Happy reading!

      1. Thanks for that. I did install goodreads but then couldn’t see how I could add books I’d already finished. I want to do that so I can just check my list on my phone when I’m at the library. I’ve made a excel file and did print that but currently what’s most useful is just a list on my phone, not quite what I want though. 🙂

  4. Gosh it sounds like my heap by the bed, of books I bought haven’t read yet and have no space on book shelves for. So hard to choose where to start and then volunteering in the library and reading bloggers recommendations does not help get the heap down! Good luck with your challenges!

    1. Oh my Cathy – volunteering at the library would have me in a frenzy being round books all the time. Are you actually on the premises or do you deliver to outlying villages?
I’ve started reading my first pick and it’s proving to be a good one 🙂

  5. I would put them in a bag not looking and the first one you picked out then that way there is no deciding. That is what I would do. LOL !

    1. write author’s name on a scrap of paper and then you won’t have any idea of the shape of the book in your bag. Or if you have dice, pile the books and throw the dice – your number is revealed – that’s the winner….

  6. Your decision to read Australian authors from each state sounds daunting! Bob and I go to the library once every three weeks for a ‘refill’ of our bookshelves, coming home with way too many books! I try to reduce the amount of time for making a decision about which book to read first, but in the end, the choice becomes easier as I try a few pages, and if I don’t like the book, I discard it for another one. Bob just churns through his row of books, reading every one!

    1. These days I’m like you Diane – if I’m not hooked ofter one chapter that’s it! I’ll scrub that one off the list and look for a replacement!
The state / aussie author challenge has been fun. The internet has thrown up lots of books for me to order from the libary so I’ve read both historical and contemporary novels. Good fun – maybe you could try in using your provinces and Canadian authors 🙂

  7. I usually start worthy books with good intentions, then get diverted onto basically easy reads – ie ones that grab my attention. Happy Reading.
