 A while ago I would occasionally take part in WWW Wednesday when it was hosted by MizB, now Sam looks after it over at Taking on a World of Words. Recently some bloggers asked about books I’d read so I thought this might be a good time to take part again 🙂

My current read is – The Sunnyvale Girls By Fiona Palmer

Have just started and don’t think it will take me long to read, this is what these days is called ‘rural lit or chook lit‘ set in Western Australia.

Three generations of Stewart women share a deep connection to their family farm, but a secret from the past threatens to tear them apart.

Widowed matriarch Maggie remembers a time when the Italian prisoners of war came to work on their land, changing her heart and her home forever. Single mum Toni has been tied to the place for as long as she can recall, although farming was never her dream. And Flick is as passionate about the farm as a young girl could be, despite the limited opportunities for love.

I recently finished – In cold Daylight by Pauline Rowson

Fire fighter Jack Bartholomew dies whilst trying to put out a fire in a derelict building. Was it an accident or arson? Marine Artist Adam Greene doesn’t know, only that he has lost his closest friend.

But Adam knows there is no turning back; he has to get to the truth no matter what the cost, even if it means his life.

Mmm – that’s just what the tale is about – how Adam Greene goes about finding the true facts concerning his friends death.  A very quick and easy to read book – not very long chapters – the book actually looks longer than it is.  But, oh there were so many twists and turns even I was beginning to lose my patience.  It was an interesting way to pass a couple of cold days – having lived several years of my life in Portsmouth I recognised landmarks he mentioned – would I recommend it?  Maybe, if there’s nothing else to read on your book shelf.

My next read will be – I’m not really sure

Still continuing with my Aussie Authors quest I have The Lace Balcony by Johanna Nicholls sitting here – it’s on loan from a friend (as were the two above)is a fairly lengthy early Australian historical novel (over 500 pages/50 chapters) and with a ‘no hurry, just return whenever’ directive I think I might leave it until the long hot summer days arrive 🙂

  1. I’ve taken to reading Canadian authors for my patriotic reading, Cathy, especially the award winning writers. There is much to learn from our compatriots!

  2. I did a book review only a week ago. I finished the book. The seven daughters of eve.
    Not fiction a science book on genetics.
    But I’ve also recently read two biographies
    One by jimmy barnes. And one by Magda szubanski.
    Currently a fictional story called the ragged trousered philanthropist
    Wow. And here’s me thinking I don’t read as much as I used too lol

    2. I looked for the ‘Eve’ book when you spoke about it. No joy at our library I’m not into autos-bios but will look for your other book. Sounds like fun!

  3. My brain is out to lunch at the moment (and didn’t invite me) so I have mostly been reading agreeable trash.
    However, yesterday (despite a recent book cull) I acquired two more that I am really looking forward to.
    The next in Ben Aaronovitch’s Rivers of London series (magic and mystery) and the second Letters of Note – compiled by Shaun Usher. Funny letters, tragic letters, moving letters…

  4. I’ve recently read The Taming of The Queen by Philippa Gregory, a tale of life as wife to King Henry VIII and the goings on within the palace courts, as told by Kateryn Parr (Katherine) the sixth and final wife. I found it to be a book I couldn’t put down.
    Currently reading A Wizard Abroad by Diane Duane, about a young American wizard, Nita, sent to stay with an Aunt in Ireland and finds herself working side by side with Irish wizards as the Irish past begins to happen again and again; they must collect the four legendary objects to battle the evil Balor and his Fomori.
    Next in line is The Straw Men by Michael Marshall, that one is waiting on my kindle while I read a few “real” books. I’ve read it before and remember it being a good read, but can’t remember the story.

    1. Maybe I’ll have to go high tech and use mu ipad sometime because my library only has that series in ebook form. Looked them up on Fantastic Fiction – sound intriguing

  5. I’m reading one of Barbara Nadel’s Inspector Ikmen series – Deadline. Not as good as others I have read in this series, which is a pity as the others were excellent.

  7. I thought when I moved, I would be reading much more -but I’m struggling with the ones I have…so I’m currently reading 2!

    Arkie’s Pilgrimage to the Next Big Thing – au: Lisa Walker (just picked off the library shelf)
    Never Go Back (A jack reacher novel) au: Lee Child (recommended by a blogging friend of mine)

    Next in the pipeline – already here something I requested but I don’t know why, possibly recommended by another: The Bullet Catcher’s Daughter au: Rod Duncan – on the spine Library has labelled it Fantasy…

    1. I’m noting lots of these titles for next year – Arkie is in my libraries inventory so will be on my reading list.
      Determined to extend my ‘interests’ Fantasy Witches & Wizards Magic. Will look at them all 🙂

      1. okay, I’ve spent a good part of today finishing “Never Go Back” and other than a whole lot of nastiness i.e. breaking peoples arms and headbutting others…enjoyed it. Never a dull moment and quite easy for me to follow.

        Not sure when I will get to the others but, you may have got me back on a reading streak, thanks

  8. After today’s news reading lightweight books may be just the ticket. On the other hand I might get even more cross.
    It’s back to mysteries and thrillers for the moment, except that I am also rediscovering Saki, whose extremely funny and satirical short stories could well be the antidote to current woes. He has an infallible way of disposing of the less desirable part of humankind.

    1. Summers not quite here yet – Spring pops in for a day or two and then nips off for a day or two. I think the hot Summer will arrive all at once with no gentle build up.
