There is one great thing about not being tied to a full time job and that is being able to just ‘do as you please’.
Normally I’d describe myself as ‘not a tv watching person’ and even tho there is the garden as well as books and craft calling out to me each weekday afternoon, with the present colder sometimes wet weather the gogglebox seems to be turned on more and more ‘just for a look see’ rather than to watch anything in particular. Mind you, having said that, when he is home (read that as when he’s not golfing) the reruns of Jag are claiming The Golfer between 1 and 2pm lol
Believe it or not rather than the ‘useless rubbish’ we often have scheduled for daytime tv (and I have been known to mutter ‘I’d hate to be housebound and have this for company) there are some watcheable programmes on the ABC at the moment.
I’ve even labelled them my Afternoon Delights
(Now now, we’ll have non of that giggling down the back thank you lol)
Some days (if the pollies are in town) the afternoon on the ABC (our national commercial free television station) begins with what I’ve heard described a comedy show but is in actual fact ‘Question Time’ (which is live from Parliament House in Canberra ). Often watched with the sound down as at times they tend to act like squabbling children!

It used to be followed by Midsomers Murders (watcheable no matter how old the repeats were – yes even this ‘older lady’thought John Nettles was dishy :)) but now there is a series I’d heard about over the years but seem to have missed out on watching. Called ‘Last of the Summer Wine’ it was seen on British television from 1973 until 2010 when the last episodes were broadcast. I don’t remember it being shown here until quite recently – it is pure giggle type fun, so easy to watch and could be so so true to life.
The basic premis is:
Three old men from Yorkshire who have never grown up face the trials of their fellow town citizens and everyday life and stay young by reminiscing about the days of their youth and attempting feats not common to the elderly.

Then comes repeats of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple/Marple (the ITV series) – a character invented by Christie, supposedly based on older family connections.

Easy to watch, keeps you on your toes wondering about ‘who dunnit’, remembering the times and the fashions (post war/1950s) and enjoying Geraldine McEwan’s acting, twinkling eyes and cheeky smiles as well as trying to work out what she’s knitting in each episode lol

During her many visits to friends and relatives in other villages, Miss Marple often stumbles upon mysterious murders which she helps solve. Yes, all very similar to what you enjoy. Midsomer is timeless, as is Miss Marple. Geraldine McEwan is brilliant in the role.

Daytime TV here is awful. About all I can stand is (commercialized) “Castle”. PBS doesn’t show “The Last of the Summer Wine” until late. They are a hoot! They haven’t shown “One Foot in the Grave” for a while now – I wouldn’t mind watching them again.

I don’t tend to watch TV…but my husband does! He is full of something called Happy Valley on U.K. t.v.; various Latin American soaps and further soaps from South Korea….
I loved ‘The Last of the Summer Wine’..well, the first series anyway.

Cathy, did my sister write this post for you? She is a great fan of all those ‘who dunnits ’. Have you seen Morse, the curmudgeonly detective played by John Thaw? That one was set in Oxford.
When Elly was about ten we went on a tour of Yorkshire. One day was spent in Holmfirth, the setting for Last of the Summer Wine, visiting all the places featured in the programme. Compo, Cleggie and Nora Batty’s houses before we went into the pub.
We stepped up a gear on another day with a visit to Haworth, the hilltop village not far from Bradford in the heart of West Yorkshire’s Bronte Country. It was a great holiday.

If crafting I will listen to the digital radio station playing all the 80’s songs but lately I’ve been popping in a DVD. Today I was watching hogans heroes. Love Schultz. But I have so many I can choose from. Have also recently finished the call the midwife series. Really loved it

It is funny I usually don’t watch TV or movies but enjoy current events on the news. I know the news are full of bad news mostly but there is still some kindness in the world that are noted.

I don’t know why I pay so much for satellite television because I watch so many reruns. There are all these new shows offered and lots of movies, and what do it do? I record previous episodes of Law And Order, or Bones, or CSI and Criminal Minds. One thing about being old, you can watch things over and over because most of it has already been forgotten. I watch all the British TV shows I can, but there are not as many available as at one time. As Time Goes By is my ultimate favorite because Jean and Lionel were so much like me and Ron. Usually my TV watching begins about 4:30 PM and I only pause the shows to run in and out taking care of putting all the critters to bed.

Oh boy! Your timing is perfect!!! I love Last of the Summer Wine. We’ve been watching it here in Minnesota for a while. Last year, the PBS station swapped it out for something else, but soon brought it back. I don’t remember what they put on instead. I didn’t watch it. I missed the guys. In fact, when I titled my post yesterday, Last of the Spring Peonies . . . it was my own little tribute to one of my favorite shows. Goodnight loves it too. So glad you found it.

A full time worker here but I too can watch re-runs of Miss Marple. And love the Eggheads. I did used to waste a lot of my holidays veging out in front of daytime tele; it was my way to unwind. Now I am more picky – DVDs help in that!
